“Oh my God, Ivy, just fucking call her.”

“I can’t,” Ivy whined, upside down on the couch. She knew she was whining, too, which just made it more irritating. “What if she changed her mind?”

Aaron, who sat next to her, rolled his eyes, reached over, and flicked her forehead. Jerk. “She literally kidnapped you and fed you hot chocolate and kissed your forehead when you looked horrible and were contagious. Those are not the actions of a girl who doesn’t want to make out with you.”

Jesus, only her brother. “Okay first of all, fuck you. Second, how the hell would you know?”

“Asexual doesn’t mean I don’t like kissing,” he said, shoving his glasses up his nose with his middle finger. Ivy would have liked to believe he did it by accident, but that didn’t seem likely. “Plus every damn piece of media wants to show it to me.”

She thought about that as she slithered down the couch and righted herself. “Yeah, all right, fair. Third, that was when I was sick, and you know how she is about people to take care of. What’s she going to think when I’m not a disaster?”

“Yes, she likes looking out for people, but consider,” Aaron said. “You’re a disaster all the time.”

“Fuck you,” Ivy said, but her heart wasn’t in it.

“I’d prefer it if nobody did,” he said, and flopped back against the couch with a groan. “God, young love is so fucking annoying. You know I actually came over to hang out with Summer, right?”

“I don’t mind,” Summer volunteered, from her seat on the floor by the coffee table. They were probably swearing too much for an eleven-year-old. Thank God Summer didn’t like to swear herself, and anyway she’d seemed absorbed by her book until Aaron said her name.

Aaron smiled at her. “I know, Summerchild, but that’s because you’re a darling. I’m mean and I do mind.”

She frowned. “You’re not mean.”

“He’s mean to me,” Ivy said, as a matter of record.

“Because you’re mean to him first,” Summer said, which was an unimpeachable point. “Anyway I think you should call her too. Lars says he’s tired of you dancing around each other.” She paused. “Well, actually he said he was tired of the sexual tension, then he told me not to say that he said that. I don’t know why. I know what sex is.”

Ivy exchanged a glance with her brother and decided to ignore that bit. “You don’t think she might have changed her mind?”

Summer tilted her head to the side. “Maybe,” she said. “But if she has then she’s stupid. And wrong. And I don’t think you would like a stupid girl, or a wrong one. And anyway you made a promise and you have to keep a promise.”

“There,” Aaron said. “You promised to take her to dinner so you have to. Go call her. I’m going to hang out with the sister I actually like.”

Ivy flipped him off- fair was fair, even in the unlikely event he hadn’t meant earlier- and went down the hall to her room. They were both right, she reminded herself, as she closed the door behind her. She had made a promise, and Gina did like her, even if maybe she didn’t like-like her-- and now she was annoying herself. Time to put on her big girl panties and call the nice girl. She tapped Gina’s contact and put the phone to her ear.

“Ivy!” Gina sounded breathless when she answered, and excited. Ivy felt a smile grow across her face. “Hi! How are you feeling?”

“A lot better, thanks,” she said. “So listen, I was thinking about that dinner I owe you...”
