They say that one never forgets one’s first love, and that’s true enough.
It’s not that Ineku regrets his choices--he loves his complicated, dangerous wife, and of course he wouldn’t trade his children for the world. But there are moments, here and there, where a memory of the girl he’d loved as a teenager creeps into his mind.
Those moments are rarer and rarer as time goes on. The last time he ran into her, by chance, when he was visiting his family, he hardly even recognized her. He realized that he hadn’t thought of her in--at least a year. Probably longer.
And yet, Ineku wouldn’t say he’d forgotten her, exactly. When reminded, he can pull up every detail of their off-and-on romance, the moments they’d shared, the future together they’d contemplated.
But on a day to day basis…
Telari will always have a place in his heart, but she no longer rests in his mind.
And, as startling as it was to realize it, a moment later, he’s at peace with the thought.
She can live in his past, treasured and remembered from time to time. But his present, and his future, belong to Kesshare and the children.
Which is exactly as it should be.
