Landelye had known, for as long as she could remember, that she stood at a turning point in history. Unless her legitimate uncle reappeared, or every doctor was wrong and her mother managed to conceive again, there was a very real chance that Father would change Elanhe’s laws and she would one day be Queen in her own right.
For nearly as long, she had also known that she could do it.
Not because she thought it would be simple. She knew better than that. She knew that it would be all too easy to make serious mistakes, ones that would cost her and her nation dearly.
But she was clever, and capable. She had poured every ounce of focus and energy into preparing herself--studying, cultivating allies, learning how to fix her mistakes when they happened.
By the time Grandfather died and that potential future came that much closer to reality, Landelye was ready. It might take years to convince the Court of the same thing, but as soon as Father opened the door for her, she would make it happen.
She would be Queen. She would be a great Queen. Whether or not others came after her, she, at her turning point in history, would prove it could be done.
