Lapis Lazuli #10, True Blue #24
Name: shadowsong26
Story: Loved
'Verse: Feredar
Colors: Lapis Lazuli #10. disabuse, True Blue #24. With friends like this, who needs enemies?
Supplies and Materials: graffiti (Lilith Faire Day 4a: Village Stage), photography, tapestry (True Blue + novelty beads), sculpture (in relation to the second person listed here), canvas, seed beads, novelty beads (ties that bind)
Word Count: 341
Rating: PG-13
Characters: Seda
Warnings: References to sex/adultery; also her sisters are kind of awful.
Notes: Constructive criticism welcome, as always. Seda is one of Mellir's many mistresses, they were together around 975/976 FY.
Seda had been told, over and over again, that she had made a mistake, getting involved with Prince Mellir.
Her sisters had told her, with an air of such concern, that he was just using her for his pleasure, that this liaison would never progress to an honorable marriage, that it would leave her ruined and disgraced and alone.
While they didn’t say so in so many words, the meaning was clear. What could a royal Prince, second in line to the throne, want with a too-short squint-eyed girl who had so many elder sisters that she didn’t even bring much of a dowry to a match?
And, as much as it hurt, Seda knew that at least part of their concerns had merit. Her lover would never marry her, and he would likely move on to another mistress in time. But she had known from the start that this would be temporary. She knew exactly what she was doing, when she accepted that first invitation for a private dinner in his rooms.
Because what her sisters didn’t know--what very few people know--is that she never felt ugly or unwanted with him. She never felt like a burden, an extra daughter taking up space in a family that was already larger than it needed to be.
Mellir’s love might not last forever, but it was real. The way he smiled when he saw her, the way he made a conscious effort to make her happy…
Seda wasn’t blind to her lover’s faults. He drank too much, he spent most of his life resenting the Crown Prince and…well, like her, feeling extra and unwanted. Taking up space in a family that didn’t need him or love him.
A relationship didn’t need to be permanent, or honorable, to be real. And Mellir would provide for her, and the child she now knew she was carrying, even after their liaison ended. She was confident of that.
It wouldn’t last forever, but Seda didn’t care. For this moment, she, and Mellir, were loved.
