Cerise #14, Lapis Lazuli #18, Color of the Day
Name: shadowsong26
Story: Bittersweet
'Verse: Lux
Colors: Cerise #14. Loved one left a note, Lapis Lazuli #18. breathtaking, Color of the Day (prelapsarian)
Supplies and Materials: miniature collection, graffiti (Lilith Faire Day 1, Main Stage), pointillism, glue ("Taking yourself out of your logical brain and letting emotional intelligence guide you may be difficult at the moment. Still, your heart is a more trustworthy navigator to follow right now.")
Word Count: 309
Rating: PG-13
Characters: Lux, Mariko
Warnings: This is. Uh. Not a healthy relationship. Discussion of impending character death.
Notes: Constructive criticism welcome, as always.
The first time Mariko says ‘I love you’ is soft and unexpected, murmured sleepily against Lux’s neck maybe six months into their liaison; Lux spends the rest of that night staring at the ceiling, listening to her Human lover breathe, trying to decipher what it means.
The last time Mariko says ‘I love you’ (or rather, the last time in that first relationship), it’s quick and casual, after breakfast one seemingly-ordinary morning, followed by a brief kiss before she leaves for her office on the station; Lux savors the taste of it, sharp behind the too-familiar, almost-comforting sweetness, because she knows what she must do today (although it isn’t until much later that she knows how close her Human will be).
The next time Mariko says ‘I love you’ is a long time in coming--Lux has stopped counting the time since their reunion, and while Mariko had left Red Sky of her own volition, had chosen to come with her, despite everything, it’s just as unexpected as the first time; add the fact that it’s deliberate, that Mariko takes a breath, takes her hand, and says the words, and…well.
Each time after that--and there are many times after that; spontaneous and deliberate; casual and full of weight--Lux treasures the sound; memorizes every inflection, every expression on her Mariko’s face; locks them away in a treasure chest inside her heart--because Mariko is Human and ephemeral, with such a brief lifespan, and even if Lux’s war doesn’t force them apart again, someday, Mariko will be gone and Lux will be left with nothing but her memories.
Lux makes sure to count them, tallying those words the way she tallied her eons in prison, as the months and years wind on, savoring the bittersweet taste of three little words in a little Human mouth, before they’re gone forever.
