Notes: I had a lot of the same feelings.

Maybe a month before graduation, Ivy's friend Queenie dragged her and Prudence and some of their other friends to the flat roof of the dorm to watch a meteor shower. Queenie's telescope was a pain to get up there but a blanket and a bottle of wine did a lot to fix that.

Ivy wasn't drunk-- she'd had half a glass of wine, if that-- but she almost felt that way, tipping her head back to watch the stars wheel and fall above her, bright streaks of light plummeting toward earth. They seemd so close. She could almost believe the warm night breeze was the wind of their passing.

Two feet away, Queenie muttered at her telescope settings. On Ivy's other side, Prudence lay flat on her back, eyes closed, hands folded over her belly. Chandra and Ines and Jeff and Sandy, lying in purloined lawn chairs or on spread-out beach towels; her friends. They'd be graduates soon, and gone: to graduate school, to jobs, just away.

And what came then? All her life Ivy had known exactly what came next. A summer job, a fall semester, a winter break, a spring final. Now there was nothing but the endless stretch of the rest of her life, unmapped, uncharted. She wasn't afraid, exactly. Ivy feared very little. But she was uncertain in a way she didn't know and didn't like. What came next?

"Oh!" Prudence exclaimed. She sat up now, pointing at the sky. "Look, shooting stars!"

"Yes," Queenie said, dryly. "That's why we're up here, Pru."

Prudence ignored her, bouncing in place. "Quick," she said. "Make a wish!"

Ivy closed her eyes. Whatever comes next, she thought, and wished.

I love it! This captures so well the melancholy that comes with the end of college (I actually started my LiveJournal a little before I graduated from college, and I originally subtitled it "the final ten minutes" because that's pretty much how I felt all the time in those weeks leading up to graduation).
