Cool Black 13: Rough Day
Author: Kat
Title: Rough Day
Story: Shine Like It Does
Colors: Cool black 13 (everybody won't be treated all the same)
Supplies and Materials: Seed beads
Word Count: 442
Rating: PG
Summary: Naomi has a terrible day; Katie might have a solution.
Warning: Minor swearing.
Notes: Ever had a volunteer who's just A Problem?
Naomi shut the front door behind her with heartfelt relief. This day, this shitty godawful day was finally over, and now she could be inside and have a nice dinner and talk to no one and maybe put her head in Katie's lap for a while...
Katie, as if the thought had summoned her, poked her head around the kitchen door. "Hi hon-- oh. Rough day?"
Naomi considered several responses. Because she loved Katie and wasn't angry- no, incandescently furious- with her, she settled on, "Awful. Can I have a cuddle?"
"Absolutely." Katie came fully into the hallway and opened her arms.
She was warm and squishy and a delight to hug, all soft curves and belly. Naomi closed her eyes for a moment and burrowed her nose into the crook of Katie's shoulder, just where she smelled faintly like... potting soil?
"Been gardening?" she asked, without opening her eyes.
"Yes, all day," Katie said, stroking her back. "Do you want to talk about it or would you rather just be loved?"
"Snuggles now," Naomi said. "Venting later."
Katie laughed, and kissed the top of her head. "In that case, let's go sit on the couch."
--
Snuggle time was couple time and work had no place in it, but dinner was a different matter. Over spaghetti and garlic bread, Naomi told her partner about Todd fucking Stewart.
"So he's suing us for discrimination, defamation, and unpaid wages. And the worst part," she finished, twining spaghetti around her fork, "is that he's going to win if we go to court. Well, not over the unpaid wages thing, but everything else. So we gotta cave."
"That's awful!" Katie said. "I hate people like that. You need a good civil litigation lawyer."
Naomi snorted. "We're a nonprofit, sweetheart. He's got one of the best in the business. We definitely can't afford someone to match that."
"Well, not ordinarily," Katie said, in that almost-apologetic non-apology tone she used sometimes. It was both endearing and infuriating and sometimes made Naomi wonder about her childhood. "But my goddaughter is a lawyer, you know. Christopher's oldest, Miranda."
Naomi tried not to think about most of Katie's childhood friends, but Christopher was a good egg. "I thought she was a teacher?"
"That's Charlotte," Katie said. "Anyway, I'm sure Miranda would be willing to help you out at a reasonable cost. She might even do it pro bono, if I asked."
"Hey now," Naomi said, "we're not that poor. But a discount would be nice."
Katie smiled at her, that warm wide smile that made Naomi fall in love with her all over again. "I'll see what I can do."
