Fatimah hears his step on the front stairs, but he does not unlock the door. He does not knock, or call out. She listens: the footsteps retreat and do not return.

Good, she thinks, vicious. He knows when he's not wanted.

And he's not wanted, not here. He fucked another woman, fine, let him go sleep in her filthy bed. Let him lose everything to his own unfaithfulness. Let him never come back.

Let him come crawling back, so she can slam the door in his face.

She rubs the curve of her belly. She will never take him back.
