"I can't forgive her," Danny said. She lay flat on her motel bed and stared at the ceiling, at the white swirls of paint, tracing them with her eyes. "I won't."

Michael rolled over beside her and bumped his shoulder against hers. "Then don't. You don't have to."

"You have," she said.

He shrugged, the motion rocking her to the side a little. "Yeah, but that's me."

Danny propped herself up and looked down at his face, so dear and familiar. "You won't hate me if I don't."

It was a statement, but he answered it anyway. "No, of course not. You're my sister." He smiled up at her, half cautious. "You won't hate me if I do forgive her."

"No, of course not," she said, and the truth of his words hit her as the truth of hers rolled in her mind. "You're my brother."

"Well, there you go then," he said, and nudged her with his shoulder again.
