Mariko was an adult, and had been for a while now. She knew that relationships weren’t all giddy elation, butterflies-in-the-stomach delight. They took time, and effort, and work, and not-insignificant chunks of that time were anything but sunshine and rainbows. And when the logistical difficulties of dating someone of a different species were thrown in…

Yeah.

Still, she couldn’t help but feel a certain--something--when Lux smiled at her, or touched her shoulder to draw her attention to something, or, hell, even just walked into the room.

(So, okay, maybe she wasn’t quite adult enough to be immune to a ridiculous high-school crush, but she was at least adult enough to keep it to herself when she did. She just…daydreamed a little, on occasion, when Lux was close by.)

On the other hand…

There were times when she caught a sort of look in Lux’s eyes, that same warmth, that butterflies-in-the-stomach delight that kept filling her up reflecting right back at her, and…

When Lux smiled at her, with that look in her eyes, Mariko couldn’t help but give into that feeling, if only for a moment, and let herself feel just a little bit giddy, a little bit optimistic; couldn’t help but think that none of those practical, logistical issues really mattered.

That someday, if things kept going the way they were--maybe it would be a little more than a daydream after all.
