When Nolani was young and wild, she tried to be a multitude of things to her many lovers--playful and serious, leader and follower, challenger and comforter, purely physical or purely intellectual, and everything in between--because she wanted a variety of things from each of them, depending on her mood and what had first drawn her to them; it was, after all, only fair for her to return the favor.

With Lonura, the first time, Nolani felt the heady rush of being all those things at once--Lonura was clever and charming and older, more mature; but also shy and sweet and far more sheltered; at the time, Nolani had thought that that balance might just keep them together for the rest of their lives.

When Lonura left--when Nolani told her to leave--she tried, for a while, to be all things to Andrell as well, and maybe in so doing clung a little bit too hard: their relationship was never romantic, but she did love him, and she knew he loved her, and figuring out that same balance when they were husband and wife and, if not lovers, certainly very dear friends, went a long way towards filling the void in her heart.

And then Lonura came back to her, and of course it wasn’t quite the same--they had said awful things to one another, they had been apart, and they weren’t young and on the outer edge of their wildfire years any longer--but it didn’t take them long to settle back into a familiar rhythm, to balance one another again; finding their way back to one another felt like coming home.

In her later years, with both Lonura and Andrell gone, Nolani found herself almost wild again, seeking and becoming a multitude of things for multiple lovers: playful and serious, leading and following, comforting and challenging, purely intellectual and, yes, purely physical, too; but she never found another companion who could be all things in one to her--but having had it for so long, she didn’t quite want to try and replace what she’d lost; at the end of her days, she was happier with her variety once again.
