Her hands tremble when she gently takes the baby Frey holds out to her. She is Scared. For so many reasons. Sad. For so many reasons. Happy. For some reasons...
The little one kirrs and she smiles. Looks up when she hears Alan enter the house. He returns her smile when his eyes take in the scene in front of him. Caithlynn, sitting in a chair, a baby in her arms. Frey standing behind her, looking proud. Frey's wife, in a chair next to her, eyes almost falling shut. It seems the baby cried through the night.
-
An hour later, Alan finds her outside, watching the sunset. Her hands still trembling.
He places one of his own on her shoulder. She doesn't flinch anymore.
A sad smile on her lips when she places her hand on his. The trembling stops. Just for a little while.
They don't speak. Words are not needed. Not anymore.
He knows how she feels. For he feels the same. Old. So very old. And not because they are in age. But because of what they have been through. What they have seen. And done.
-
Frey and his wife and their little one stay for a couple of days.
They talk and they smile and they don't say a word of all that has happened all these years ago.
The war. The Shadow. The Wielders. The Dragons.
Tessa leaving after they won, saying they would never see her again, because meeting up would always bring back pain and memories of suffering.
When the new family moves back to the North, Caithlynn is - in a way - relieved. For she loves Frey and his wife and she adores the baby, but their happiness also brings pain.
Smiling she keeps waving until she can no longer see them. And then the sadness return to her face.
Frey was angry when Tessa left like that. But she could actually understand the other girl's reasons. Though the goodbye hurt her lots.
When she turns back to the house, she sees Alan walking towards her. It surprises her a little. She thought he went back home the evening before. But she smiles a greeting and invites him in for tea.
-
Sighing softly she sets herself on her coach when Alan has left a couple of hours later. She is tired. And she feels old. Not of use anymore.
She likes Alan's visits. Despite how they felt and acted when they first met and throughout the first part of the war, Alan has turned out to be a great friend. The only one she can really talk to. The only one who really understands her.
Frey is a great friend as well. And he also understands. But it is not the same. He's younger. Has been protected by the elder three. And now, he has a life and a future and he is happy. Something Caithlynn completely fails to have and be herself.
She looks at her hands, constantly trembling. No matter what she does or tries. It never stops...
