That night, after the battle, when her wounds were bandaged and the Dark Magicians were vanished, she curled up against her Dragon’s side.
The warmth of Taigiri was comforting but it was not enough to sooth her troubled mind.
And no matter what comforting words her Dragon or Frey or even Alan said to her, she could not get the feeling of despair out of her.
So she cried herself to sleep, save under Taigiri’s wing.
-
”Caithlynn…”
The gentle voice makes her look up again. Vaguely she wonders where her Dragon has gone to, but when she sees the man standing before her, it doesn’t really matter.
“You…”
The man smiles and she can’t help but smile back.
He holds out his hands and she takes them, squeezing gently to make sure he is real.
“Hello my daughter.”
A soft laugh escapes her and she marvels at how good and even familiar the words feel. Even if she was raised only by her mother.
“Hello father.”
Her answer comes just as naturally. Though her smile vanishes when she sees how he suddenly becomes more serious.
“You are doing so well. I am so, so very proud of you. As is your mother.”
She shakes her head. “Am I? Are we? It doesn’t feel that way. They are so strong, the Shadow and its servants. And I… Alan is strong too, trained for this his entire life. But I…”
Her father smiles sadly and places his hand on her cheek.
“But you are strong too. And you have been trained as well. Even though not in the way Alan has been. But you are well prepared. Though perhaps we should have made it more clear to you…”
Rolling her eyes she resists the urge to punch his arm. Her father can read the battle on her face and he laughs softly.
“You are my daughter. You have the gift of the Element Air. You have the gift of a Dragon. You have the gift of your legacy…”
She frowns. “But no one ever…”
He place a finger on her lips and she halts abruptly.
“Look inside you Caithlynn. You know where to search. Look inside and find that missing thing you need. Fighting the Shadow has been going on for centuries. And as long as there are Wielders, it will be fought. But you have to understand. You have to find it, inside you.”
-
Blinking she opens her eyes and looks around. Feels the warmth of Taigiri against her body, hears the Dragons’ breathing and sees how she’s sheltered by a huge wing.
He is right, you know.
She nods and doesn’t wonder how her Dragon knows.
This story is as old as time. From the beginning it has always been the Wielders against the Shadow. Times of war. But way more times of peace, when the Shadow was defeated.
“I know. I do. But still. What if we fail? After all the previously won wars. What if we lose?”
Don’t worry. We haven’t lost before. We are not going to lose now. But you need to remember. You need to find that missing thing you need. You need to remember…
Closing her eyes, she sets herself up and lets her head rest against Taigiri’s flank.
“I will find it. I will remember. We cannot lose. This story, that begun so many centuries ago, will not end with me…”
