Lova had made many sacrifices for her cause. She had lied, she had murdered, she had turned her daughters into soldiers and spies. And it had all been worthwhile--the ends, in time, would justify the means. So she accepted the blood on her hands, the stains on her soul, with grief, but without regret.

Except for one.

It had been her first murder, which was probably part of why it bothered her so. She'd been sixteen and unhealthily idealistic, and had made a mistake that would have compromised several Movement operatives if not corrected.

And then she'd botched the job.

Because of her inexperience, she hadn't given that poor man the right dose, and he'd spent nearly an hour retching and weeping in agony, until she couldn't take it anymore. Her knife in his throat had ended his suffering, but made it impossible to camouflage the intent.

Two more hours to stage the scene, and she'd thought the stench of his blood and vomit would never leave her. At times, even now, she could still catch a breath of it oozing from her pores.

She got better at it, after that. At preventing the necessity, and being clean and kind when she couldn't.

But decades later, she still dreamed about him from time to time. And she doubted she would ever manage to come near the cemetery where he lay without remembering that wretched night, and feeling every drop of the blood on her hands.

I feel kind of bad for her, even knowing she did something horrific. Does that make me a bad person?
