"Leaving so soon?" Tahnrin asked.

"Mm," Sefalin said, then took the clasp out of his mouth, holding his half-finished braid firmly in the other hand. "I have an early meeting with the King tomorrow."

"Ah," he said, and he didn't really need to say more.

They both knew that, if Sef went to Larien straight from Tahnrin's rooms, that made a statement, a commitment, explicitly favoring Tahnrin over Landelye. And they both also knew that was not a step Sef was willing to take. His personal feelings for both of his lovers aside, once he made such a declaration, he would no longer be able to serve as a balance point between them. No longer be able to keep things from escalating beyond all control.

It wasn't something they had ever discussed out loud, of course; but they knew. Some things were simply better left unsaid.

"Very well, then," Tahnrin said. Then, with a mischievous smile, he grabbed Sef's collar and tugged him down for one last, lingering kiss.

Sef nearly lost his balance and fell into Tahnrin's lap. He did lose his hold on the braid. "Tahnrin--" he started, exasperated, then sighed, biting back a smile of his own. "I still have to leave," he pointed out. "And now I won't be presentable when I go."

"True," he said. "That was rather rude of me, wasn't it."

"It's all right," he said, kissing him once again--quick and light, to show he wasn't really upset, but he was a little short on time if he wanted to get any sleep before his meeting.

"Hmm." Tahnrin eyed him for a moment more, then nudged him to a seat. "Here," he said. "Let me fix it."

"You don't have to--"

"Hush. I insist. I made the mess, I should clean it up." He smiled again. "Besides. I think you'll find my hands are very deft."

He coughed once, feeling heat rise in his cheeks. "I'm aware," he said dryly, then took the indicated seat and closed his eyes.

Tahnrin laughed, warm and low and pleased, then kissed the top of Sefalin's head and got to work.
