“I’m pregnant,” Isabella announces, grinning, and Nicoletta returns her grin just as broadly.

“Is, that’s fantastic.”

As she rises to hug her, there’s a stab in her gut, telling her to call off her plans, to not ruin things for her sister, her best friend—and in that instant, she can’t ignore it.

When Isabella leaves, she picks up her phone, finding Liam’s name in her contacts. “Yeah?” he answers.

“About Rita,” she says. “It’s going to have to be a short visit.”

“Nicci?” he asks, obviously picking up on her meaning: it’s off.

“Change of plans,” she says, simply.
