Nida sat in the gardens, watching her daughters play. The boys were with her--Mellir curled up in her lap, and Kellom sprawled on the grass next to her, both of them fast asleep.
"Majesty."
She didn't look up--of course she knew her sister's voice. "Rema."
"May I sit?"
The movement wanted something. Rema hardly ever came to see her otherwise. "You may."
Rema sat next to her and spent a moment rearranging her skirt and watching the girls. "Mellir seems to be doing well."
"He is, thank you."
"How old is he now? I'm terrible with remembering dates, you know me."
Nida forced a smile. "A year next Tuesday."
"How lovely." Rema fell silent for a moment, making sure the guards were more occupied with making sure the girls were playing safely than with what the Queen and her sister were talking, then resumed, in a lower tone. "I have something for you."
"Yes?"
Rema pulled a small packet out from one of her gloves and offered it to Nida.
Nida eyed it. "What is this?"
"Something for your husband."
Nida's stomach sank. She'd known something like this was coming, of course--it had been the plan all along, to make sure the next king was someone who would advance the movement's agenda. And while her daughters could legally inherit, if she hadn't had sons, governments headed by kings were generally felt to be more stable.
She glanced uneasily at Kellom. He was still sleeping.
"Nida."
She jerked, and reluctantly shifted Mellir so she could take the packet and hide it in her own clothing. "How will it work?"
"It doesn't have much of a taste. You can mix it into almost anything. Heating it lessens the potency, so I'd recommend wine."
"When?"
"As soon as possible. While we could come up with a legitimate excuse for you to have this..."
Nida bowed her head. "Will...how much pain will there be?"
Rema arched an eyebrow. "Is something wrong?"
"Of course not. I simply...need to know if I need to take precautions against..."
"Ah." Rema shook her head. "I'm told it's not pleasant, but there shouldn't be any screaming."
Somehow, that wasn't comforting. "How long will it take?"
"Up to an hour."
Nida swallowed. I can't watch that! "Will it be detectable?"
"Only if someone else sees it working." Rema smiled at her. "I'm sure you'll be able to time it so you're safe. You always were the cleverest of us."
Nida nodded, and looked out at where the girls were playing. You might be old enough to put it together...
"Are you sure you're all right?" Rema asked her. "You know how important this is."
"Of course I do," Nida replied. She held Mellir close. "You'll know when it happens," she added, desperate for Rema to be anywhere else other than talking about this with her.
Fortunately, Rema took the hint. "Of course." She stood, and curtseyed. "It was lovely to see you, Majesty. And to see how well the little princes are doing."
Unable to answer in words, Nida just nodded and held Mellir close. She continued watching her daughters, and listened to her sister walk away.
"Mommy, I want juice."
Nida jerked a little--she hadn't realized Kellom was awake. She caught herself quickly and smiled down at him, making sure the packet from Rema was securely hidden. "All right. Let's get your sisters and go inside."
"'Kay."
She called to her daughters and they came with a minimum of complaining. She managed to keep a smile on her face as she led them inside.
Please forgive me for what I have to do.
