Fesha had had one of the most exhausting mornings of the past year.

Ensill had somehow managed to set the kitchen on fire. Not a large fire, but enough that Fesha had been able to smell the smoke from up in the boys’ room, where she was calming Selmid down after he’d had another nightmare.

Deshell, who had been out all night because someone had brought a knife into a barfight down at the docks (fortunately, he hadn’t been hurt; but handling all of the fallout took time), got in while all this was happening. Fortunately, he managed to put out the literal fire, but then he’d all but passed out on the couch, exhausted, and she’d been on her own to get the boys fed and out the door to school.

She shut the door behind the boys, closed her eyes and counted to ten, twice, and started to clean up the mess in the kitchen. With any luck, her day would improve from here.
