Notes: This is the first thing I've written in a few days. I think I may be a little rusty. Constructive criticism is really welcome.
“Fernando…” Elisabeth called his name.
Fernando looked up from the papers he had been looking at. He smiled when he saw her.
“Elisa!” He said holding out his arms. She slipped into them and he hugged her tightly.
“It’s afternoon. I thought you were meeting with your friends today.”
Elisabeth looked up into his dark brown eyes and smiled slightly.
“I was, but I skipped this meeting. I’d much rather spend time with my husband.”
Fernando smiled and placed a kiss on her head.
“Is there anything in particular that you wanted?” He asked over her head.
A little sigh escaped Elisabeth. She nodded against his chest before looking up at him again.
“It’s about the rebels,” She started.
His grip on her stiffened and Elisabeth suddenly felt nervous.
“What about them?”
Elisabeth slipped out of his arms and stood back.
“I want you to give them pardons, Ferdi.”
Fernando sighed and pinched his temple.
“Elisabeth, we’ve been over this…” he started.
She placed her hands on his shoulders.
“Ferdi they meant well. They just disagree with certain things. I believe-“
“They must pay the price for their crimes, Elisabeth. If I let them off, it sends a bad message.”
Elisabeth stepped back and turned her back to him. She wiped furiously at a tear that had escaped her eye.
“What about their children Ferdi? Don’t you care about them?”
Fernando looked at his wife’s back. He could tell she was upset. But she wasn’t in his position. If he didn’t have the rebels executed, his people would think of less of him. But he didn’t let the rebels go, Elisabeth would be hurt. It was a no win situation.
“I’m not promising you anything, Elisa. But we’ll let the rebels have their say in court. If the jury finds them guilty then there is nothing else I can do.”
Elisabeth faced him again and smiled. She placed her hand on his cheek.
“You’re a good man, Fernando Abadesso.”
Fernando smirked at her and kissed her palm. “But you’re a better woman.”
