When Kes was little, she used to wish she was like Taz. Ambitious, gregarious--fearless. She watched her older sister sail in and out of danger and let it wash off her like rain, danger that made Kes’s heart stop just a little.

Taz was always moving, always winning, and her momentum never seemed to die. Kes knew she couldn’t do that. She was always cautious, the practical one. And she knew that was important. She knew her sister needed her, for that and so many other things.

But, sometimes, she used to wish that she could be like Taz.

The Glory sinks, and a part of Taz is dying with him.

Kes can’t bear to watch. She catches herself thinking--maybe, if Taz wasn’t so fearless, if Taz were a little more like Kes, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad.

Kes hates herself for thinking that.

She wishes, in these moments, as she and Taz sink as hard and as fast as their ship, that she could turn back time. She wishes she could make Taz what she was again--ambitious, gregarious, fearless.

But she knows she can’t, and feels like a part of her is dying as well.

By the time Kes comes into her own, she’ll know better.

She won’t wish Taz sensible. Taz will find her own way there. Maybe through the war, maybe motherhood, maybe just growing up. But while Taz will always be Taz--ambitious, gregarious, fearless--Kes will know she’s tempered it with wisdom. She won’t worry anymore.

She won’t wish herself fearless. She’ll take pride in calculating her risks. But she’ll learn to leap, and build her own momentum. Maybe through leadership, maybe loss, maybe just leaving Taz’s shadow.

Because she’ll know she doesn’t have to be Taz to have no fear.

Oh, I love this. The tense-shifting is really cool, and Kes's affection and love for her sister comes through so clearly.
