"Do you remember how it was before?"
Surprised Alan looks at her. The same look present at Tessa's face as well. Frey is already sound asleep. Curled up against his Dragon for warmth.
"Before this. Before this blasted war. Before all the fighting. Before we became Wielders. Do you remember how everything was before?"
There are tears in her eyes when Caithlynn looks at them. And the light of the fire gives her face a ghostly look.
Tessa nods. Just once. Before a hard glance covers her eyes. "But it is the past. We must focus on here and now. On the battles and winning. We cannot be defeated Caithlynn. We cannot let them win. And memories of a happier past will only make us weaker."
The words make her flinch as if she was slapped. Welcome back to reality, dreamer... Taunting words echo through her head.
Almost desperately she looks back at Alan, hoping against hope that his words would be kinder.
"Tessa is right. We should be focused on here and now and not dwell on the past. Beside, I've been preparing to be a Wielder for my entire youth. There is nothing else I remember."
Sighing she closes her eyes and turns her head away from the other two Wielders. They make her feel so young and irresponsible and stupid.
Without a word she stands up and walks over to her own Dragon, hiding beneath his wing, snuggling close to his side. Asking for warmth, but for comfort even more.
She can hear Alan and Tessa whisper around the fire. After all, she controls the Element Air. She can bring any words to her. Shouted, normally spoken, barely whispered. It doesn't matter. If they are said, she can hear it.
"I never imagined this would be what we had to deal with. A Water-Wielder who's nothing more but a kid. And a Wind-Wielder who is nostalgic and insecure and perhaps just a kid as well. She's scared Alan. Scared. And she's not a fighter, you can see that in her eyes."
Shaking her head Caithlynn wraps her arms around her own shoulders, rocking back and forth against Taigiri's side when she hears the words. They hurt, but they are true as well. She knows they are. She is not a fighter. She has never been. She never will be. No matter how many battles she has fought in. No matter how many battles there still are to come...
"True. But she is loyal, Tessa. As is Frey. They are no fighters. And yes, they are scared. But honestly, after all Caithlynn and I have been through, I got scared as well. I might not show it, for I am trained this way. But it's true. And I'd rather have Caithlynn by my side, and Frey for that matter, than anyone else, during this war. For I've come to know her. Them. And I trust them."
There's a harsh tone in his voice. Caithlynn can hear it. And thrust and faith. She can hear that as well. It touches her. Despite they disliking each other, despite his cold words earlier. She's surprised and touched at what he says now.
"You're only here for a couple of days. You've only just joined us. You have to get to know them. I learned to trust her, Tessa. And Frey as well. I learned when Caithlynn protected my back, when I was attacking too rash. I learned when Frey bandaged my arm after said attack. I learned when we saved each other's lives countless of times. She's no fighter, true, you can see that in her eyes. But she fights. She does. And she fights well. They both do. And Frey needs less protection than you fear."
Without waiting for Tessa to reply, Alan stands up and walks over to his own Dragon. Smiles at Naigendra when she lifts her wing so he as well can crawl against her side.
Caithlynn is about to let the Wind stop bringing words to her, when she hears Alan's voice as if he was standing next to her.
"I mean it, you know..."
Closing her eyes, she smiles and snuggles closer to Taigiri's side.
"I know."
She knows the Wind will carry it to him. Only because she wants it to. Too bad it cannot carry the feeling of gratitude...
