Under The Bed Balck
Name: Sebastian
Story: Baby, It's A Long Way Down
Colors: Under He Bed Black: 15. Rattle
Supplies and Styles: none
Word Count: ~500
Warnings: a little grief, I guess
Summary: The first night after their parents die, Tally has a hard time sleeping.
NotesSo, I realized I had not written anything from tally's POV and I wanted to fix that. This is a few years before she's taken by the river but I knew I wanted to write something before that point so I did this.
Also! I finished Under The Bed Black! My first color of the year! :D Hopefully there will be more.
The first night they sleep in the house after their parents die, Tally is terrified. She's not even sure what she's so scared of but it's a bone-deep fear that settles inside her and she doesn't sleep.
Hadley does, she sleeps like she's been deprived for years and Tally can't wake her when she first tries. It only adds to her fear, somehow convincing her that Hadley's gone too, that everyone was dying around her and she would be the only one left alive when everything was said and done.
The rain outside makes it feel like the end of the world, her mind imagining an endless flood that she only manages to survive because of luck. Her heart starts pounding faster in her chest and she shakes her head, trying to scatter the discomfort in her mind.
The only thing that happens is that she starts getting a headache and Hadley rolls over, which at least reassures her that her sister isn't dead.
She knows things come out in the rain, there are stories about the sirens coming out from the water and scouring the land in hopes of finding something to pull into the depths with them. There are other whispers about the water witches, those people who've been claimed by the river and offered its gifts. It's said they work their strongest spells by the river in the rain.
She's not a witch, and she's definitely not a siren but the rain used to bring her comfort. She used to enjoy listening to the drip drop of the water onto their roof and windows. When the wind howled in especially bad storms, she'd close her eyes and pretend it was wolves howling.
It was fun and the soundtrack of the weather going on always made reading much more enjoyable.
But then her parents passed and the rain is slick with pain now.
She wants to believe she'll get over it, that she will be able to move on and enjoy the rain once again but she doubts it right now.
Hadley makes a small noise in hr sleep and rolls onto her side. Tally is right there next to her and when Hadley is settled again, she moves to press her back against her sister, curling up close.
THere's another soft noise and Tally can feel her sister wake up for a moment even before she speaks.
"Tay?" Hadley's voice is thick with sleep but then she seems to register the rain and is curling around Tally, putting an arm on her, as if to somehow shield her from the weather or, at least, the memories that come with it.
Tally doesn't say anything but Hadley stays quiet too. They stay in bed the rest of the night, alternately awake and asleep, trying to hold out until the storm is over.
Because if they can survive the night, if the storm passes and they're still there in the morning, they have the chance to make it through another day and maybe things will be better.
