Nolani wasn’t quite as close to her sister as she was to her brother, or even Ri. But it wasn’t because she and Kira didn’t love each other. It was just that...well, Kira was so much younger, that they didn’t spend as much time together.
But when they did, they got along very well. Like today--Kira just turned six, and was going through one of those periods small children do where they are very imperious. Nolani, from her lofty perch of fourteen, had seen many, many other children around the court behave the same way, and was mostly amused by it, and enjoying her rare time with her baby sister.
Besides, indulging Kirana’s whims could be fun, and usually involved a lot fewer ‘adventures’ than playing with Isshiri at six had.
That didn’t mean Kira hadn’t kept her running all over the palace most of the day. But now, the sun was setting, and they had settled quietly near one of the fountains, Kirana sitting on the ground between Nolani’s feet; Nolani on a bench, braiding her sister’s hair, watching the sky so she could point out the constellations as they showed up, just as she’d promised earlier that afternoon.
On impulse, she bent down and kissed the top of Kira’s head. “I love you, imp,” she said.
Kirana sighed. “I know. I love you, too,” she said, leaning her head against Nolani’s knee for a second before turning and giving her one of those oddly serious looks she got sometimes. “You’ll always be loved, you know. It’s your special magic.”
Nolani blinked. “What?”
Kirana, however, refused to answer--like she always did when she got like this. Mamma always wanted to know when this sort of thing happened, mulling it over with one of her calculating faces that meant Things were about to Happen.
Instead, she shook her head, and her little face brightened with a much more ordinary six-year-old grin. “Your turn! Move, I wanna braid your hair.”
“All right,” Nolani said, smiling back and switching places, bracing herself for her sister tugging a little too hard and letting her thoughts drift.
Maybe Mamma was right to keep track of moments like this. There hadn’t been a seer for over a century, but such things weren’t unheard of. And, now that Nolani thought on it, nothing Kira said had ever failed to come true.
Poor little one, she thought. And I thought I was destined for a hard life as Mamma’s heir and most valuable pawn…
Still, Kira’s prophecy--if it was a genuine prophecy--had been a good one. Nolani was more than willing to spend her entire life being loved, though she didn’t really think it was magic. For a moment, she selfishly hoped Kira was a true seer, so that what she said would come true.
“Look, ‘Lani!” Kira said, tugging Nolani’s head as she pointed. “Stars!”
Nolani looked up, trying not to wince when her hair got pulled. Sure enough, the first stars were just starting to peek out of the darkening sky. “So I see.”
“Tell me the names,” she said, as imperiously as any normal six-year-old.
She grinned, and complied.
I think I’m all worked up over nothing, she thought. It was far too early to worry about any of this. Most likely, they were all seeing things that weren’t there. And even if they weren’t, Kira was smart--certainly smarter than either her or Isshiri. Whatever her future held, she’d be fine.
And, whether or not Nolani’s future was full of love, she knew that her baby sister’s hands in her hair were proof that her present had plenty. Even if they weren’t as close as sometimes Nolani wished they could be, they still found many, many moments like this, to her eternal delight.
The future would be whatever it chose to be. Nolani could only control so much of it. But her present--her present was bright and beautiful, and she treasured it.
