“Permission to speak freely, Majesty?” Captain Villar asked.

Kellom waved a hand at him without looking up from sharpening his sword. Villar had been part of Kellom’s bodyguard since Kellom was seven and Villar just eighteen. He was more than used to the older man’s bluntness, and was well prepared to take whatever he had to dish out. Still, the proprieties must be observed.

“Have you taken leave of your senses, sir? This couldn’t be more obviously a trap if they were using your brother for bait.”

He shrugged one shoulder. “I’m aware, Villar,” he said. “Still, the chance to kill--or, better yet, recapture--Isshiri isn’t one I can pass up.”

“You’re not usually one for this type of foolhardiness,” he tried.

I’m not usually presented with a chance to take out a non-human who dares share a title with my nephews and brother. I’m not usually presented with a chance to take out a serpent who invaded my home. I’m not usually presented with a chance to, at one stroke, remove the symbolic justification for the invasion of my homeland. Not that killing the bastard would end the war, but it was a profound gesture to his enemies, both at home and abroad. Once he put that victory in Sola’s hands to spread the word, it would likely go a long way to quelling the unrest within the city.

“Sir?”

Kellom stood up, resheathing his sword. “I’m doing this. You cannot stop me.”

Villar gave him a long, penetrating look--almost the kind of fey look one gave a dear friend who was marching to his death. And he was, perhaps, not entirely wrong to do so. But, at length, he broke the look and merely shook his head and sighed. “I can’t stop you,” he agreed quietly.

He nodded once, and left the room, preparing to head out to the front lines for his victory--or his death.

The determination in Kellom and the subtle nature of his relationship with Villar made this a fabulous read.

I know I just asked for more Lova, but per chance is there more Villar in the future as well?
