Name: shadowsong26
Story: On Piracy
'Verse: Feredar
Colors: Blue Opal #16. Practical, Tuscan Red #2. A rubar poco si va in galera, a rubar tanto si fa cariera./Steal a little, go to jail; steal a lot, make a career of it., Jade #4. I climb up high and look on the four seas/Heaven and earth spreading out so far
Supplies and Materials: bichromatic, photography, retouch, yarn
Word Count: 300
Rating: PG-13
Characters: Taz
Warnings: Don't think so.
Notes: Constructive criticism welcome, as always.
Taz has never wanted to make her whole living from piracy.
Not out of any moral objection, mind--she pirates often enough, and more than enjoys herself in the doing. Piracy’s a hell of a rush, much more than honest trade. And, when it goes right, piracy gains a clever Captain and her crew a lot more money a lot quicker.
It’s that ‘when it goes right’ problem that keeps her from chasing it full-time. Piracy is unsteady, with more lean months than fat. After all, no matter how big the prize, the money’ll run out someday. And who’s to say when another golden opportunity will present itself?
The thing is, there’s always trade, there’s always messages, and a Captain with quick wits and a quick ship and a loyal crew can almost always find honest work. It ain’t glamorous, but it keeps her and her crew fed and clothed. And, for all her reputation as a reckless, short-sighted, glory-hungry adventurer, Taz would never shirk her responsibilities as Captain for her own glory or adrenaline rush. Besides, she gets all the riskiest honest assignments anyway, especially with the War on, on account of her reputation and the Glory’s speed.
So, she pirates when the need or opportunity arises, but she takes on honest work, too. And if she sometimes finds herself bored out of her skull on those runs…well, her crew stays loyal, they all do well, and Captain Taz Hantree doesn’t need to steal glory, anyway. She has the wind in her hair and the sea all around, a War to win and her name to make.
She’s never wanted to make her whole living from piracy, not really. And, even in the dull moments, whether it’s fortune or fame she craves, she knows she’ll never have the need.
