Kit had a habit of wearing his wealth; gold braided into his hair, around his waist, at his throat. It wasn’t a custom of his Clan--it had been, centuries ago, but had mostly fallen out of favor for all but dancing girls--but he liked the way it shone. And it was another mark of his power; another weapon, like his hands or his blades--wealthy men, after all, had strength upon strength, and he did so love to show his.

And it soothed him, when his hands itched between ports, when his glass knife and case of hands sang to him for company. It soothed him, to finger the gold chains and watch them catch the light, and he could let that tide him over until the next fiend’s eyes rolled on the floor and he heard them whimper in their fear.

Clanking gold didn’t sound quite as sweet, of course, but it pleased him almost as much.
