When Deva went to law school, everyone--everyone--assumed she would become a corporate lawyer for the family. To be fair, she could sort of see why, since that was what most people in her position did. But…okay, it wasn’t like she lacked family loyalty or anything, she just…

She didn’t want to go into that kind of law. She sure as hell didn’t need to. Sure, it paid well, but she was lucky enough to be a trust fund baby. She could do whatever the hell she wanted and still live more than comfortably just on what she was born with. Besides, the family had plenty of lawyers who lived for that sort of thing--contracts, lawsuits, whatever.

Still, they kept assuming, despite her frequent efforts to correct them, to explain for the umpteenth time that, no, really, she was going into criminal law.

It was mostly annoying, since it wasn’t like they were trying to dictate to her or anything, just fundamentally misunderstanding her personality and goals. So, it did sort of hurt, because she was pretty sure her family went on believing she’d join the firm right up until the city officially hired her as a prosecutor.

Hodamn, Deva is awesome. I'm glad she went her own way in this; it sounds like she would have been really unhappy as a corporate lawyer.

Man I love Deva. And I get that sort of expectations hurt. they're not meaning to hurt anything but they do. :(
