There is a difference between envy and jealousy; the one is rooted in covetousness, the other in possessiveness. Queen Kesshare, despite her lack of most ordinary human sentiments, is familiar with both.

Perhaps it is because these are not emotions she lacks--though they come from a different source than for most--that they are among the easiest for Kesshare to manipulate in others.

Envy…well, there’s only so long dangling a prize in front of someone’s eyes will entice them, before her target gets frustrating or desperate and she loses control. She tends to rely on it as a last resort.

Jealousy is often easier. All she has to do is position someone or something as a threat to what her target cannot abide losing, and they are putty in her hands.

They are two of her favorite intangible tools, envy and jealousy--because they are different, and because she understands them inside and out. After all, it’s rather hard to dream of empire without envying what others have--position, territory, influence, etc. And of course resent any perceived attempt to take away what is rightfully hers--nothing draws out her native cruelty so quickly or with such intensity.

Kesshare has long known that subtle shades in meaning are where one stands to gain the most ground--and envy and jealousy, her own and others’, contain some of the most effective shades of all.
