He hit her. Once.

He hit her, and Leah saw it all over again; her parents in the kitchen, her father yelling, the sound of flesh on flesh, the bruises blooming across her mother's face. Her own skin is just as pale as her mother's; the bruises are just as bright, and shocking.

He hit her, and Leah called Robbie, her brother and protector. Robbie remembered too; he came right away.

He hit her, and he left for work. They're waiting now, shotgun pointed at the door.

He hit her once. He'll never get the chance to do it again.
