Tana has a list, hidden deep in her desk, of all the ways she can kill the people who deserve it.
She started it when she was little; and mostly she keeps that one to laugh at it, in all its petty, whiny glory--the complaints of a six-year-old, and the ridiculous plans for vengeance against her parents and her siblings.
It got more serious as she got older, and started to realize there were actual horrible traitors in her family; what she planned for Mamma was quick, but for Aunt Rema it wasn’t, and for Deva, she never really managed to decide, but she was pretty sure she belonged on the list so she left her there.
Her dearly beloved wretch of a brother Mellir is more annoying and stupid than awful, but he makes her so mad so often, if only because he doesn’t respect Kellom like he should, that he practically has his own list; she’s almost sad to burn it up when Kellom finally puts him out of their collective misery.
Andrell--ooooh, Andrell, when he defects, gets his own list, too, but it’s a very, very short one; all it says is ‘make him hurt.’
There are other lists, too, of course--for the freaks, for nonspecific traitors, for the enemy soldiers outside the city; but those she doesn’t even bother to hide, since no one thinks she shouldn’t kill those people anyway--it’s just for the personal traitors, the really, really awful ones, that she keeps her list hidden, and reads it every night.
