Despite everything, Imi can’t help but feel incredibly lucky, now that she’s found her sisters.
Rubika feels like the oldest, even if she’s the youngest except Imi. Maybe it’s because Imi met her first, since she was the one who brought her into the Family after Mama died. Or maybe it’s because Rubika is Death, and…well, it’s like the old fairy tale, about the goats and the bridge, and Rubika is the biggest and baddest of them. Sort of. She’s actually kind of the nicest, but that’s beside the point.
Dimana is the one she feels closest to, and the one she spends the most time with. Dimana is the one who plays with her. They spend hours, with Imi learning how to cheat at cards and get people to do what she wants them to, while Rubika flies the ship and Shane sits in her corner, doing…well, whatever it is Shane does when she’s by herself. Dimana says those’re the more important lessons, not the regular school stuff.
Shane teaches her that, and a few other things that only someone really, really old knows. And maybe that’s why Shane doesn’t feel as close as the others--less like a sister, and more like an aunt, or a grandma. Imi likes to sit at her feet, listening to her tell stories, quiet and content when their other sisters get a little bit overwhelming. Dimana’s just so…Dimana, and Rubika is the bright star they all follow.
Imi loves them all, in different ways, and she can’t imagine how she managed to live without them.
