Note: Having a blast with this so far!
The three of us were hanging around in the little room where all the kids have school. Which had ended for the day, so it was empty. The overhead lights weren’t even on.
I was lying on one of the long tables, reading a book I’d checked out from the library while I was still in Newton. Kit and Edina were playing their game.
“Alright, your turn.”
Edina passed the chalk over to Kit, who immediately got busy drawing.
I’d seen them playing this game before, but I wasn’t quite sure what all was involved. It had something to do with drawing two creatures on the blackboard, then deciding what kind of conversation they would have.
The trick to it, which made it a game, is that neither one could see the other’s creature until the scene was finished.
Kit was putting the finishing touches on his drawing, something small, with ears and fluff. Edina was still leaning into the blackboard, holding a sheet of paper over hers.
Then it was time for the big reveal.
Edina’s creature had bristles and fangs, and was about three times the size of Kit’s.
They noticed this, and burst out laughing. Then got down to figuring out what the hell this weird pair would have to say to each other.
Kit whispered something. Edina shrugged. Then smiled
“…Milo?”
I looked up from my book.
“Yeah?”
“We were thinking you could do the caption this time.”
“Oh. Okay.”
I walked over to the blackboard, but I was still just as stumped as they were.
Eventually, after what seemed like an awkwardly long time, I thought of something.
Taking a piece of blue chalk, I drew a big, clumsy speech bubble over Edina’s drawing. Inside it, I wrote:
YOU MUST BE THIS TALL TO RIDE
(rargh!)
For some reason, they both found this hilarious. Then I started laughing, too, but mostly because they were.
Edina said it was a creative thing for me to come up with, because I’d never been to an amusement park before.
Really, I knew I just wrote it in because I couldn’t think of anything else.
But, I decided I liked their game.
Enough to play again tomorrow.
