Elisabeth awoke slowly. She opened her eyes and everything was bleary. She looked over and saw Fernando playing with a strand of her hair.
“Good morning,” he said wrapping the strand around his finger.
“Morning,” Elisabeth yawned. “What time is it?”
“I believe it’s around 8 am, but I’m not sure,” he said pulling her closer to him. He kissed her forehead before placing a kiss on her nose.
“Stop!” She yelped pushing him away. “My face is all dirty.”
Fernando laughed and kissed her on the lips.
“I’ve told them to bring us breakfast,” he said rubbing her shoulders.
“Breakfast in bed?” She asked.
“Mmhm.”
Elisabeth clapped her hands together delightedly. “I’ve always wanted breakfast in bed, but Papa said that it wasn’t proper for a princess.”
“You’re a Queen now; you can do whatever you want.”
“Within bounds of course,” she said cuddling back up to him.
He laughed heartily. “Of course.”
There was a knock at the door.
“Come in,” Fernando called out.
The heavy wooden door opened and two servants came in with trays. Elisabeth sat up and reached for hers, while Fernando did the same. The servants bowed before leaving.
Elisabeth tore off a piece of bread and stuffed it into her mouth.
“Someone’s hungry,” Fernando said laughing.
Elisabeth swallowed her bread and wiped her mouth with a napkin. “You tired me out last night.”
Fernando smirked at her. “I hadn’t seen my wife in five months, can you blame me?”
Elisabeth laughed and cut a piece of her mutton. She chewed it for a minute and then swallowed.
“This reminds of the meals we used to have together before we were married,” Elisabeth mused.
“Really?”
“I expected things to change after we got married. But everything is the same.”
Fernando reached over and placed a kiss in her hair. “You worry too much, my dear.”
Elisabeth laughed lightly. It was true of course, but she would never admit that to him.
