"It'll be over soon," Ivy said. "One way or another."

She meant it to reassure, but from the way that Gina ducked her head, it wasn't at all. Perhaps she shouldn't have mentioned the other way. But Gina wasn't stupid; Gina knew they could all be dead tomorrow. Lying wouldn't have done either of them any good at all.

"I don't want to die," Ivy tried.

"Don't you?" Gina's voice was absolutely neutral. "Going against Crassus..."

Ivy shrugged one shoulder. "We do what we have to," she said. "But I'm not going up against him."

She had the pleasure, then, of seeing Gina's head snap up, eyes wide. "You're... but everyone else is... you said you were going to battle!"

"I am," Ivy said. "But not... directly. Look, Crassus is going to try and kill us all, but there's people who can't fight." You, for one. "Like Olivia."

"I don't know," Gina said. "I think you're underestimating Olivia."

It was a fair point. Half the gladiators in camp were terrified of Gina's tiny heart-sister. "Fine. Like Summer. And then there's the children. We can't leave them."

Gina glanced at the baby in her basket, her small face peaceful in sleep, and nodded tightly. "Yes. Of course. Spartacus told us to make for the mountains."

"Well, you can't go alone, can you?" Ivy asked, in her most reasonable tones. "Crassus won't stop trying to kill you just because you're not fighters. So I'm coming. Summer's boys too, I think." And others, her father, some friends. Injured fighters, who could still protect the weak.

"You're..." Gina was staring at her, and tears were starting to gather in her eyes.

Fuck. "Don't cry," Ivy said, helplessly. She pushed herself forward and hovered uselessly, alternately reaching for Gina and drawing back. "I didn't mean... I'm not... look, nothing has to happen, I just want to make sure everyone gets away. But especially you. And, I mean, my family will be there, and I'd like... I won't let anyone hurt you. I--"

Thank goodness Gina knew how to manage things. She grabbed Ivy by the hair and yanked her into a kiss.

When they broke apart, while Ivy was still blinking and trying to make her thoughts begin again, Gina said, "You won't leave me."

It sounded more like a question than she probably meant it to, but that was all right, Ivy could answer questions. "No," she said. "Never. And I won't let this be an ending."

Gina took a deep breath, and glanced back at the baby. "Not for any of us," she said.

"Not for any of us," Ivy agreed, and kissed her again.
