thelinesoflearning made me do it. I also should point out that the thing that is following Teddy is based around the Wild Mass Guessing on the Slenderman Mythos, though I feel awkward saying that it's Slendy himself following the poor boy around, just the version, I guess.
Also, this may wind up being a canon AU because I totally want to write more for it.
He’s ten years old, looking in the mirror and seeing his friend in the background, even though he knows he’s not going to be there when he turns around. Teddy waves, grinning a ridiculous little smile at his friend.
He’s always there, hiding in the mirrors and reflections. He exists when Teddy is alone, or when he needs someone to comfort him when Davey’s not around. He’s a good thing, a friend he can trust as much as Dave, maybe even more because while there was a time Dave wasn’t there, his friend has always been around.
~
Teddy wakes in the night, Dave by his side. He’s staring into the darkness and his mind is racing. Thoughts are moving too fast, hands are shaking and they’re maybe even his own. He can’t entirely tell but he knows that he can’t get his head to stop pounding, no matter how may times he takes slow, even breaths.
His chest is tight, his hands are slick with sweat and he wonders what’s going to happen t him, if this is a heart attack or just one more anxiety outbreak that he can’t entirely admit to.
He wants to wake Dave but he can’t bring himself to do it and his stomach turns at the idea.
Something moves out of the corner of his eye, a figure moves closer and he sees him. Sees his old friend in a way he never had before. He sees the blank thing that should hold a face and he wonders if he’s still dreaming, if he thinks this is something he should be afraid of.
But something touches his face and he feels blackness overwhelm him, everything including the fear that threatened to beat him down.
~
He is five and he’s terrified.
School is starting and he doesn’t want to go, the idea makes him sob hysterically and cling to his mother. Everything is wrong in the school. The smells are wrong the positions of the hairs and desks are wrong. He walks in and he knows something horrible is going to happen, even though he can’t explain why.
But his friend is waiting in the doorway of the school and he relaxes a little. He won’t be there alone, that’s good He reaches out, taking his (Is it his? He’s never been sure, as his friend never talks) hand and moving inside. His mother doesn’t say anything abut his friend, though she looks relieved when eh calms down.
~
He’s looking through footage of the day, laughing a little as he sees Dave and Anya be goofballs at each other. He loves his friends and he finds comfort in their silliness. But something soon catches his eye, a movement on the corner of the screen.
He zooms in a little on the corner and he sees it
There’s a man that’s not quite there, standing in the doorway behind Dave and Anya. He’s long and thin and from what Teddy can tell, he doesn’t…well, he doesn’t seem to have any facial features at all.
He remembers his old friend, the one who used to find him when he was little. He remembers how comforting he used to be.
And he wonders where that comfort is now that he’s being confronted with him again.
~
He’s twelve and Dave is in the hospital again. He’s so scared because he knows his best friend, at least one of them, isn’t okay and he doesn’t know what to do. He can’t fix anything, he doesn’t know how to make it better and he’s just left sitting there, hopeless and worried as Dave sleeps
His other friend comes to him, touches his shoulder and even though he has no mouth, Teddy can feel the reassurances there. He relaxes a little and lets himself feel the comfort and promise that everything is going to be alright.
It’s going to be, his friend doesn’t lie to him.
~
He starts doing research and it starts scaring him. He starts reading accounts of the thing—person—creature that he has been calling his friend from people he’s never met, and showing up in places he’s never been. He doesn’t seem friendly to them though, he seems anything but.
He seems terrifying.
But he’s never been terrifying to Teddy and he doesn’t understand.
People have blogs, Youtube channels, all sorts of things, just devoted to him and Teddy’s throat closes up at the idea that this is something he should be scared.
He doesn’t know how tot be scared of his old friend but maybe he should.
Maybe he should be very scared.
