The sky looked like it was cracking apart at the seams, spilling shards of light onto its black expanse. Danny lay between two dunes, her head on her folded hands, always looking up.

Her mother didn't know she came here, but then her mother didn't know anything about her, really, and her father didn't care. Michael knew. Michael would sneak out with her if he could, if she'd let him. But this was her time, and anyway Michael didn't like the cold, or the roar of the waves devouring the beach one rush at a time.

She'd heard that you could swim in the oceans, once upon a time, before people turned them to poison. Like there was any point in swimming. Or doing anything else, really-- they'd destroyed the earth, the plants, the water, even the air, though at least you could breathe outside without a mask, sometimes. The sun was too hot, the nights too cold. The whole planet was a kind of desert now, and Danny couldn't wait to leave it.

That was her secret, the one she couldn't share with Michael. He liked the earth. He wanted to stay planetside and help fix it up, like a broken-down house somebody had left to be condemned. Danny didn't have his patience. She wanted out. She wanted away.

She wanted to fly through that hole in the sky, find out what was beyond the dark and what circled those pinpricks of light. It was a slightly guilty thought but she wanted to find out what it meant to be alone, to worry only about herself and never any family or friends. She wanted out so badly it felt like her skin was too tight. Like the planet was a chrysalis about to burst.

She was going to join up, the second Michael was of age and she could leave him. The Space Corps would take anyone desperate enough, and she was desperate. She'd break free, grow a new skin and a new life, be someone entirely different, someone who didn't hurt the way she did.

The planet grew tight around her.

She couldn't wait to breathe.

JUST SOMETHING MY BACKEND.

A GLORIOUS SOMETHING.

I especially liked the line: He wanted to stay planetside and help fix it up, like a broken-down house somebody had left to be condemned.

I mean it just... this thing makes itself, but that made it extra.

Thank you!
