Summary: A few snapshots of the life of Master Donat Vider. Essentially me figuring this guy out.

Snow was a lovely idea, but it was cold here. The locals gave his dark face and twisted hair strange looks -- stranger still when Donat admitted he was a wizard. He was not yet sure that he agreed with the Assembly or their rules, but yet had the humans threatened him, or asked for ancient knowledge he did not possess. Yet had they screamed, in their hissing gravely language, for his death or his exile.

Jiao was not of his land but not of this land, either, brave enough to use her own name instead of the Assembly's. )

Summary: Early in their travels, Jean and Max look for a safe place to spend the night.

Jean hauled herself over the wooden fence. Max dropped down beside her, grunting. Yellowing grass encroached upon the cement walkway around an empty in-ground pool; one of those plastic tricycles hung over the edge, a half-deflated inner tube draped over it.

"In the house," Jean muttered, half dragging Max until he yanked his arm away. Pieces of the shattered sliding glass door crunched under her boots. She snorted when she had to reach around the frame to unlock the door.

Max played with the mangled blinds. 'We should set some ground rules.' )

Her door chimed, a pleasant trill associated with one of three people: Milen, most likely, unless she had involved her uncles. Tothos doubted it.

Milen's silent eyebrow raise collapsed when she sighted the mess in the living room. She stepped inside as Tothos closed the door, neither speaking until the lock whirred.

'Gonna have to move,' Milen said. )

Summary: Mitchell prays on the Equinox.

Even at midnight the Grove was lit up as bright as the sun, candle- and wizardlight adorning the walls and trees. Mitchell kept his hood down, hoping he looked modest instead of shifty. He was a bit shifty, but that grew from self-preservation, not maliciousness.

The Grove consisted of several acres of grassland and forest, although most visitors didn't travel very far in. )

Summary/Notes: Mitchell investigates a haunting in a graveyard. This is much further along in the narrative than anything else I've posted.

Hidden at the end of a winding dirt road and enclosed by stone walls on three sides and a forest on the fourth, Caras Cemetery was most definitely not open to the public. Mitchell had called ahead. The groundskeeper, Xenia Gavril, hadn't sounded happy about it, but she agreed that there was something strange about the Paole tomb, and he was welcome to take a look.

Len fiddled in the passenger's sear, opening and closing the tube of sunscreen she had already slathered on every inch of exposed skin. "I should have worn my hoodie. I'm going to have a wicked burn before this is over."

Mitchell snorted. 'It's cloudy. You smell like a tanning salon. You're fine.' )

Summary: Moira's research is questionable.

The space between worlds need not be a metaphor. Any seasoned Ghost Seer can speak of the path the dead travel to this other side

No, that was no good. Moira tapped her pen against the desk. She was tempted to ask Mitchell for help -- her son had a gift for words, a talent that had driven him to study journalism, of all things. An odd occupation for a wizard, but who was she to stop him? The Assembly loved the idea, as long as it didn't interfere with his duties as a Seer.

He would ask questions about her research, though, questions she was not yet prepared to answer. )

Mitchell nodded at the security guard who waved him through. He didn't much see the point of one when the building didn't have so much as an entrance ward, but most mundane buildings were like that. It was nice that they weren't afraid of imminent magical attack, but a little paranoia wouldn't hurt.

The elevator groaned. )

Aldric rolled the finger bones in his cupped palm, gaze unfocused. These pieces were new, both in life and death; a wizarding child, a mundane teenager, an alfar abortion, a kernan stillbirth. All unfortunate accidents -- of course -- all within the previous fortnight.

Kaija sat across from him, elbows on the round table between them, nearly invisible in the dark. )

Summary: Detective Kellen calls Mitchell in to communicate with a murder victim.

The body lay flat on its back, limbs laid out as if he was simply enjoying some sun by the poolside instead of the center of a crime scene. Around it chairs and tables had been shoved aside or knocked over. Brightly colored cups and plates dotted confetti adorned tables, and a banner across the way read "Welcome Home!"

Mitchell stood well back, waiting for Detective Kellen to finish speaking with her partner. )

Broker's laughter echoed in the library. "The Followers of Morgause? Seriously? They're a myth perpetuated by the Assembly to keep everyone afraid of us. Don't tell me you believe that crap, Master."

"I don't want to."

The burnt-out skeleton of his home loomed overhead. Ash stirred up around his feet with each step, coating his shoes and the ends of his pant legs. It had the smell of a recently put-out campfire; no longer toxic, not longer overbearing. He stood at what had been the entrance to the house, Master Vider at his side.
