"Nick, I swear. I was not there."
You shake your head when you hear your own words. As if you are contradicting yourself. A sigh escapes you when you see the look on his face. If the roles were reversed, you wouldn't believe him either.
"I just... That day, when I asked you if I was sleeping..."
He nods. Still listening, even though you know what he must be thinking. And it surprises you. Only a little bit, but still... It surprises you.
"I swear Nick. It was as if I suddenly stood in Old Japan. With a silk kimono and everything. Men wearing katana and..."
You leaves out the fact that someone called you princess.
"And then I turned around and I was suddenly back in my room. Watching you study. And..."
For a second you are doubting whether you should tell him about the voice. That strange distant voice. You heard it twice. Once in Japan. And then back when you were in your own room again. He might laugh. But... One way or another, you know he won't.
"There was this voice..."
You close your eyes for a second, shaking your head again.
"Believe me Nick, I know how ridiculous this sounds. But... It seemed so real. And you assured me that I wasn’t sleeping. So..."
-
She is walking in circles in her own room. It's deep in the night already, but she isn't tired. Not at all. Nor is she scared anymore. Not really...
Wary. Yes. She's extremely on her guard. But she's not scared. The voice was... She sighs. Despite being scary, it was also strangely comforting. It seemed to know...
"What destiny? What future courage?"
She wonders why she is speaking out loud. Perhaps because she wants the distant voice to answer? She doesn't know. But after having seen that room, and that boy, and those clothes she was in... It just wouldn't surprise her.
And then there was that other thing. How did she get outside of the palace walls? She never goes out. Not once. What was she doing there? Suddenly standing there? It was as if it wasn't her who...
"Future courage."
It's a soft whisper that leaves her lips. And her eyes widen all of a sudden when she recalls how familiar everything felt. Even in that strange world... There was something that was extremely familiar.
-
"So..."
He suddenly speaks and you look up to him. Questioningly. And perhaps a bit hopeful.
"What did the voice tell you?"
He doesn't ask to mock you. He's seriously concerned and interested.
"When I was in Japan, I couldn't decently understand it. It said something about Destiny and bravery. But... I couldn't hear more. When I got back to my own room, it was suddenly crystal clear. And it said < Remember the past >."
You take a deep breath and keep your eyes fixed on him.
"What is this Nick? It scares me..."
He just shakes his head. Not able to answer you. Instead he sets himself down next to you, wrapping his arms around your shoulders and holding you close.
"I can't wait to go back to Japan. Perhaps my aunt might know..."
-
"Princess. They await your verdict."
She looks down at the men lying on the floor before her. Never before has she questioned her authority. And she doesn't know what has changed. Perhaps it was the reaction of the people when she appeared outside of the palace walls. The most comment sentiment was fear. They were afraid of her. No one dared looking in her eyes. She hadn't known... And she wondered what made them feel like that towards her. It hurt her.
"By the rights invested in me as Princess and ruler of this country..."
Her voices stops for a moment and she looks aside. Seeing the hunger for power in her counsellor’s eyes. It's the first time she notices. She should have noticed it before.
"It is my responsibility to assure a safe and stable environment for everyone. I have not yet decided on my verdict. We will gather again tomorrow in the morning. See that these men get a decent meal and an extra blanket when you lead them back to their cells. The nights are freezing."
Without another word, without waiting for any one's reaction, she stands up. Shooting an icy glare towards her advisor before she walks out of the room.
It is only now that she realises what a fool she has been.
< Future courage. >
She thinks she might have found it...
