Mods, can I have a tag for Falu Red please.

1. winding roads
Freya bites her lip when she sees the road ahead. A rocky road. A winding road over the mountains. For a second it scares her. Afraid her car will not be able to manage it.
"Scaredy cat."
A soft mutter to herself. There is no one to say it to anyway. She's on her own. A visit to the Highlands, on her own. Without her best friends. Without Nick. She needed this time alone. Even though Nick was against it. Everyone was against it. But she needs this. If only to prove to herself that the cancer has not beaten her.

2. green hills
She has her eyes closed. Letting the sun fall on her face. Letting the wind play with her hair.
It has been a while since she felt so at ease. Nothing has to be done. There is no pressure. No expectations. She kind of likes it.
Smiling she looks around. She's surrounded by green hills. It's so different from the city she lives in. It's... Calm. And peaceful. And... Perfect.
Perhaps not for always, but for now. For now it is perfect.

3. smoke wafting up
The first time she saw the smoke coming out of the forest, she had run back inside. The family she was staying with just smiled when she - completely out of breath and worried - rushed in to tell them there was a fire.
The man came outside with her, taking one look at the smoke.
"No fire. Just a controlled one to burn dead wood. No worries. Not dangerous. O'Neill knows what he's doing."
She found it strange the man could recognize the kind of smoke that was dangerous and the one that wasn't. But after a couple of weeks, even she wasn't surprised anymore when she saw smoke above the trees.

4. chimneys
It was the beginning of the summer and still, sometimes, the family would still light the fire. Mostly in the evening, after dinner, or in the morning. Freya never minded. She was freezing in the morning when she got out of her bed and downstairs at the table.
Her first night she wondered why there were thick covers on her bed. She soon found out. The Scottish Highlands are still cold at night. Even in summer.

5. spotty Internet
"Nick?"
She smiles when she sees his face wavering on the screen.
"You're..."
A soft laugh escapes her.
"I'm what?"
His voice sounds a bit robot-like, but they are talking and despite the stripes in her screen, she can even see him.
"You're stripe-like."
Another clear laughter and she can see her boyfriend smile at the other end of the ocean.
"Like it there?"
She nods. "Yeah, but I miss you."
"I miss you too. Love you."
She bites her lips. Wanting nothing more but to hold him.
"Love you too."

6. septic tanks
She wakes up to cursing one morning. She gets out of her bed and quickly dresses before walking downstairs
"Is there something I can do to help?"
Her soft voice makes them stop yelling.
"Sorry to have woken you up."
She shakes her head and smiles.
"Can I help?"
They take her outside, to the septic tank. And she can't stop her eyes from widening.
"Perhaps you don't want to offer your help anymore... We'll manage girl."
She surprises them both by shaking her head and rolling up her sleeves.

7. stone homes
She narrows her eyes when once more she sees smoke rise from the forest. She has been two months now and smoke is almost a weekly thing. But this. This seems different... No dead wood. And not controlled...
"Fire. At Thomas' place."
She looks aside when she hears the man's voice. There is a strange look in his eyes.
"Wife. Fire. I'm at Thomas."
Without waiting for an answer he runs to the garage.
"Let me come with you. I can help. Really."
He hesitates only a second.
"They have kids."
She nods and gets in the car.

8. paddocks
On one of her hikes, she saw an empty paddock. Most were filled with cattle and sheep. So this really surprised her.
When she asked her 'foster' family, they got this sad look in their eyes, but they didn't answer.
Freya was smart enough not to mention it again. Sometimes it still hurts too much to be able to talk about it.
The next hike she took the same road. And when she arrived at the empty paddock, she put down the flowers she had collected on her way up there.

9. farmland
She joined the family she was staying with to a trip to the valley. They had friends living there and they would be staying there for a week. Helping on the farmland.
Freya never thought she'd actually like working the earth. Sowing and such. It was rather satisfying work. To eat what you planted yourself. Perhaps she should start her own vegetable garden when she was back home.

10. vineyards
Her eyes widen when she sees the label on the bottle of wine. A Scottish wine?
"You have vineyards in Scotland?"
The man smiles and lets her taste first before answering.
"This is delicious!"
He laughs, a rich deep sound, and nods.
"Not in the high mountains here. But yes, there is a vineyard. A good friend of mine. Not for sale. Just for his family and friends. I'm glad you like it."

11. brick houses
It surprised her that in the valley and alongside the coast, there were only brick houses. While up on the mountains, they gradually changed to stone houses.
They were both warm and welcoming and she wondered what style she liked best.
Eventually she settled on the stone houses. Mainly because she lived in one for three months.

12. long walks
She often goes hiking. The mountains don't scare her. She's used to using her legs and feet. And despite the cancer having weakened her, she knows her limits and she knows exactly how far she can go so she can still make it back.
Whistling she enjoys the sun and the nature. Sometimes stopping in wonder when she sees a large bird flying over. The most awesome she saw though, were the red deer. Majestic and calm.

13. no sidewalks
There were no sidewalks in the Scottish Highlands. Not that it was needed. There were hardly any cars driving there. And when there were drivers, they were way too careful and gentle. Any hiker had more than enough time to step aside and even have a cup of coffee, in a manner of speaking.
What was more. They were always smiling. And they always apologized when they passed. As if they felt guilty they had to disturb the hikers and the nature by having to drive the car.

14. privacy
Despite living with 2 strangers in a foreign house and country, she felt at ease. She didn't feel as if she was intruding. And she was eternally grateful that - if she wasn't socially talking downstairs with them - that they left her alone. The room they gave her was hers for 3 months and they never entered it.

15. isolation
It happened, in these three months, that there was no connection at all. No internet connection, no cell phone network. Certainly when there was a storm racing through the mountains. It never frightened her, but it did make her feel lonely sometimes. No means to contact the ones she loved. It made her long for home. For arms around her and lips that kissed her. It made her long for Nick.
At these moments, she wanted nothing more but to take her car and drive back home...

This is such a beautiful sort of travelogue. I totally get Freya's homesickness at the end-- and also we have a septic tank, I lol'd at that section.
