"Uncle?"

Amassa looked up. Kesshare didn't look upset--but, then, she rarely did. Still, if she was coming in to speak with him privately without a formal request, it was probably important. "What is it?"

"I woul like to become engaged," she answered, with no change in her unruffled surface. "I wanted to inform you before we proceed with our plans."

That was...certainly unexpected. Kesshare was only eighteen, for the gods' sake. She should still be exploring herself, not choosing a consort. "Are you certain?" he asked, carefully.

She smiled slightly. "I know I'm young, uncle, but I do know my mind. And I know my fire. It isn't infatuation."

No, it wouldn't be. "Why rush into this?"

"Because he suits me," Kesshare told him. "He will be a good husband, and a better father. And he loves me."

Telling phrasing, that. "And you don't love him?"

The corners of Kesshare's lips twitched slightly. "He loves me, and he is the husband I want."

Which wasn't an answer. "Why not put this off for a few years, until you're for certain out of your wildfire years?"

"Because I'm ready for this, uncle. And so is he." She met and held his eyes.

She wasn't lying, and her points were solid. And he knew his niece--she didn't rush decisions like this, young as she was. And it was all but certain that her choice was a stellar match, politically and economically. Still, he had his doubts. But... "You are legally an adult."

"And there is no law against this, only custom," Kesshare finished for him. "But you are the head of my family, and I would appreciate your approval."

He sighed. "I will have to meet him first," he said.

"Of course." She smiled. "Shall the three of us have tea in my private garden tomorrow?"

He nodded. "I'll send a note when I know exactly when."

She bowed and turned to go.

"Kesshare?"

"Yes, uncle?"

"You are sure about him, yes? You would tell me if there were..."

Her smile lost a trace of its sharpness. "I am sure, uncle. Wait until you meet him. You will be, too."

He watched her go, and sighed. His niece's judgement was usually sound, and she was far older than her years. He should, he realized, be more concerned about her intended.

Whoever he was, Amassa hoped he had the gods' favor on his side. With Kesshare for a wife, the poor man was going to need it.

Awww, Amassa. I like that he's so concerned about Kesshare while knowing perfectly well what kind of person she is.
