Feldgrau #14, Glitter #13, Transparent #4
Name: shadowsong26
Story: Uneasy
'Verse: Feredar
Colors: Feldgrau #14. gunfire, Glitter #13. Always true to you in my fashion. - Kiss Me, Kate, Transparent #4. Scent the air
Supplies and Materials: eraser (Queen Sela AU), brush (gingerly), stain, feathers, charcoal, pastels (my current gen + romance card N2 "criminal intent"), novelty beads, glitter ("Waiting is painful. Forgetting is painful. But not knowing which to do is the worst kind of suffering." – Paulo Coelho)
Word Count: 388
Rating: PG-13
Characters: Sela, Nida
Warnings: Discussion of treason and other toxic politics
Notes: Constructive criticism welcome, as always. The sister mentioned here is not Rema, but her and Nida's other sister who was also arrested in canon.
“Did you know about this?” Sela asked, pushing the letter into Nida’s hands.
Nida took her time reading it. Sela toyed with a ribbon at the end of her sleeve, waiting, unable to look at her friend. Nida’s sister was a traitor, there was no doubt about it—unless the letter was a clever forgery, which was not outside the realm of possibility, but…
“It…lines up with her politics,” Nida finally said.
“That’s not what I asked,” Sela replied, a little more sharply than she’d planned.
Nida glared at her. “I didn’t think she would be this reckless, no. How could you think that? You know me better.”
Sela flushed. “You’re right,” she said, but she was still uneasy. She rested a hand on her swelling abdomen and drew in a deep breath. She felt more vulnerable now than she had since the first month of her reign, and for her dearest friend’s sister to…
She shook her head. “You’re right,” she repeated. “I’m sorry.”
Nida nodded. “What will you do?”
“I have to arrest her,” Sela said, without any hesitation. “You read the letter, you know that.”
Nida looked away. “I know.”
“It’ll be…hard for you, after,” Sela said.
“I know,” Nida repeated.
She was silent for a long moment, then said, “If you want to leave until it dies down, I’ll understand.”
“Do you want me to?” Nida asked, without looking at her.
“No,” Sela said. “I…” She wanted to say I need you, but that wasn’t fair. There were enough at court who already resented Nida for their closeness, and with a traitor for a sister…
It wasn’t fair to beg Nida to stay.
“I want…I don’t want you to go. But I want you to feel safe,” Sela finally said. “If that means leaving, I understand.”
Nida rested her hand on Sela’s, and the child inside her towards against their shared warmth. “Then I’ll stay, as long as I can.”
Which wasn’t what Sela needed, and besides had the distinct impression that there was something about the letter lying between them that remained unsaid, but for the moment…
She’d take it one day at a time. Maybe that would be enough.

Yep, that's pretty much her thinking. Especially with her baby coming.
