Mostly, Mel had kept to himself since waking up. He couldn't quite get up on deck by himself yet anyways, and the one time Captain Vor had taken him up had been...awkward. Like the first time he'd been with the rest of the Eagle's crew after getting stabbed, only worse, because on top of the misplaced admiration was the fact that he'd left his Clan and everyone knew, or guessed, or...

Anyway, he stayed away from the crew as much as he could.

Except for Captain Vor. Captain Vor who didn't treat him like a damaged barrel of black powder, ready to fall apart or explode or both at any second. Captain Vor who didn't ask questions, about why he'd left or about what it was like there. Captain Vor who caught him when his legs gave out beneath him and helped him balance again.

He didn't mind talking to the Captain. Even though he knew at least the lack of questions was only temporary, and probably the rest. Because after everything, after Captain Vor got him out of there, he couldn't lie.

At least Captain Vor waited until the night before their arrival back in the Islands before asking.

"I need to know at least your Clan," he asked. "And anythin' else you think might help you."

Mel drew his knees up to his chest and carefully looked anywhere but at him. "Artwick," he finally managed to get out. "I'm Artwick."

"Heard rumors about someone leavin', ten years or so back," he said, after a moment. "Guess that was you?"

Mel just nodded.

"You don't have to say why if you don't want to," Captain Vor assured him. "Whatever it was, I'll back you, if it comes to an issue. I'm on good terms with my Head, even if yours won't take you back."

Mel jerked and stared at Vor. He couldn't mean that. That sort of thing didn't happen. Ever. Apart from marrying into another--and most frowned on that as a general rule anyway--your Clan was your Clan, and if you broke faith, that was it. "Wh-what?"

"You'll have a place to stay, and someone in your corner," Vor said. "Have to say, given our Clans ain't exactly been on good terms the past couple decades, my Head'll be willin' to keep you, if it means rubbin' Artwick's face in somethin' unpleasant."

"Why would--" Mel cut himself off. Right. The awkward misplaced admiration again. It was just luck. And all I did was survive...

"It'd help if we knew why," Vor continued. "But like I said, you don't have to explain unless you want to."

And now Mel felt even guiltier about the whole thing. Because if Vor knew the truth, about what Kit had done for him...but at the same time, the chance to have a home again, to be part of a Clan again, even if it wasn't his...

A new start. A real one, not just the empty one-day-to-the-next type of living he'd endured before his arrest in Feredar.

But he couldn't start that with a lie.

Mel took a deep breath. "I left..." He stared down at his hands, shivered, and closed his eyes.

No turning back.

"I left on account of my Captain."

It seems so unfair that Mel felt he had to leave his Clan because of his brother's crimes, but I'm glad he has someone to support him, even if he feels like he doesn't deserve it.

Oh, Mel, darling. I'm so glad he could work up the courage to tell somebody this, because oh boy do they ever need to know, and I'm so glad he's safe now.
