Summary: The summer that Mitch and Tam got new boyfriends.

Mitchell leaned over the balcony, trying to calculate the distance between him and the ground. Thirty stories? Thirty-five? He was sure he'd seen that many buttons in the elevator, although he'd spent most of the ride sandwiched between Cagri and the wall so his memory wasn't completely trustworthy.

Grimm Tower sat across the street, two thirds of the windows lit up. Being this close to a tower full of kernen didn't exactly put him at ease, even considering the fact that he was about to sleep with one.

He turned back around to watch Cagri come back with his drink.

*

Another night, another empty hotel room. This one with a broken air-conditioner. Broker's attempt at a complaint had been answered with "Yer a wizard, aintcha? Just make the room cold."

Humans.

So he lay naked on top of the covers, thinking cold thoughts and glaring at the ceiling. Another twelve hours of driving would bring him to Krixos and his new assignment. Elina had promised to meet with him once he was in the city. Figured that the kid who'd had an awkward crush on him all those years ago had turned into his only real friend in the world.

*

Elina sidled up to Tam. "So? Do you like him?"

Tam glanced over her shoulder at Broker. "Sure." The man was here to replace her mother. It wasn't his fault, and Elina didn't think of it that way, but that was all Tam could see. He wouldn't even be in Krixos if Mitch hadn't run out on the Assembly.

"Really?" Elina smiled. "I was hoping... well, I think he might be able to help. If he stays with us, the Assembly might stop bothering us."

Fire built inside of her. "Do you think he'll go for it?"

"I'll ask him."

*

Tam glared at the three empty beer bottles. She threw the fourth one, scowling when nothing broke.

Mitch's mobile number didn't work anymore.

The front door opened, and instead of Elina's beautiful blonde self he walked in, humming. He stopped short when he saw her and her poor empty friends.

"Whoa. Rough night?"

She pushed herself up, heat rising on her skin. She wanted to say how she hated him, how she hated that Elina was clearly in love with him, but instead she said "My fucking brother," and kept herself from crying until Broker's arms were wrapped around her.

*

Mitchell sighed at the bright blue numbers that told him he had to be at the office in three hours. He hated his clock. He hated his scratchy cotton sheets. He hated the lukewarm air. He hated that he could still feel warm breath on his skin, sweat-slick fingers on his thighs, on his cock, inside of him; he hated he ached for a man he'd been with once. He hated how pathetically desperate he was to see Cagri again.

He turned his face into the pillow and idly wondered if he could suffocate himself. No one would miss him.

*

They barely made it to the couch. Mitchell snarled at the eight-thousand buttons on Cagri's shirt and spelled the damn thing off; Cagri laughed in delight. In between messy kisses to Mitchell's mouth, his neck, his chest, Cagri said, "I have been able to think of nothing but you."

You've known me for a month Mitchell's brain was a dirty fucking hypocrite and was now kind of stuck on the idea of dirty fucking and Cagri's teeth weren't helping. Or were helping. They sure as hells were doing something.

It wasn't until after that Mitchell managed to say, "Me too."

*

Those fireworks weren't celebrating his seventh successful night with Cagri, but he could pretend.

"Hmm. The humans do love making things explode."

Mitchell grinned into Cagri's neck. "That's what my history books said." Cagri's chuckle rumbled in his chest. "I think it's for Sovereignty, actually."

Cagri grunted. "I thought that was banned."

Mitchell shrugged. "If laws stopped people from doing illegal things we wouldn't need jails."

Cagri sat up, hand warm on Mitchell's thigh. "True. Will I read about a series of arrests in the morning paper?"

"Probably. Not in mine, though. Far too mundane."

Cagri smiled. "But of course."

*

Tam scowled at the fireworks. "Lady's sake. I forgot what day it was. I hope I get called in to arrest these assholes."

Broker cocked his head. "You can do that?"

Tam's mouth twisted. "That anti-non-human bullshit got banned when I was a kid. Doesn't stop the supremacists from celebrating, but it does get them a huge fucking fine."

Broker laughed. "Man. I wish I'd moved here years ago."

"I wish you had, too." It was out of her mouth before she could think about it. Her face burned.

Broker touched her cheek, just for a moment. "How about that."

I love this look at the different relationships and connections. And poor Mitchell just seems like he's been through a lot.

Mitch and Cagri make me happy in a really dorky way (although, Mitchell? CALL YOUR SISTER), and Tam and Broker are just... it's like they make each other happy. And they both deserve to be happy. Lovely job.
