Notes: This is the first in a series in which I figure out who Broker is and what makes him tick. He's 15 in this and not actually Broker yet.

His own coughing woke him. The air was thick and dark and unbreathable; it crawled into his lungs and burned his throat and gave him nothing, forcing his body to cough it out and breath it back in and cough it back out.

He rolled off his bed, hands scrabbling at his throat. The floor was hot. Sevana was on the other side of the wall. He had to get to her. She was alive, he could feel her, had to get to her, she would know what to do, she would--

--the door crashed open, flying off the top hinge and splintering. Strong arms wrapped around him and he couldn't see, didn't know who until Master Vider muttered a chant, old-fashioned spellwork and he pointed at the wall between his room and Sevana's, and then he and Master Vider were in the air, crashing through the window but not feeling the force of the impact and they were going to hit the ground but Master Vider kept chanting, screaming, and they hit the grass as if they'd simply lost their footing and tumbled over.

Master Vider muttered into his ear, "Breath, breath," and he doubled over himself, hacking out the smoke and taking in cool, fresh, workable air. He looked up at last, bile dripping from his mouth, eyes still watering, to take in the impossibly obvious: his house was on fire.

Flames leapt out from the Master Vider sized hole in his bedroom wall. Master Vider stood up, striding back to the house. Sevana's window exploded when the fire burst through it, seeming to reach for them.

He stood up and stumbled and Master Vider held him upright, arms around him again, gripping him tight. Master Vider was making a strange noise -- no, that was coming from him, Emeris no they couldn't be dead, they'd had dinner together for the first time in weeks and Mother and Father had screamed at each other again and Sevana had smiled and told him they weren't really mad at each other but there was no one else to scream at and Master Vider was shushing him and they weren't dead, they weren't, they weren't.

Oh, Broker. His denial that his family isn't dead is heartbreaking.

I see I read these backwards. Also, Jesus that poor kid. Knowing he was saved when they weren't... that is going to be awful.

Oh, my, I should have read this one first, shouldn't I? Ouch. His pain is very raw and real.
