Rating: PG-13.
Summary: The boys fail to get away with it.
Warnings: none
Notes: Followup to Games, one week later as requested by Kelly. I like Captain Rathbone.
Captain Lisa Rathbone had this particular way of pinching the bridge of her nose and squeezing shut her eyes that she only deployed when particularly annoyed or particularly exhausted, and it could be either this time. God knew Felipe was familiar enough with both emotions; though he hadn't provoked her annoyance that he could remember, the captain was a sharing type, and liked to spread her feelings around the precinct, so nobody felt left out.
This was good on birthdays. Not so good when someone had pissed her off. Not so good now.
Beside him, Zack shifted almost noiselessly. Yeah, he knew it too. They'd been sitting here for a solid minute and no acknowledgement from the captain, apart from a brusque request that they sit. Definitely not good.
She inhaled finally, then dropped her hand from her nose and looked at both of them with a steady, expressionless gaze. "Did you really have to shut him in a locker?"
Neither one of them spoke. They knew better than to answer that one.
She shook her head, then, surprisingly, asked, "How's your wife doing?"
Zack and Felipe exchanged glances, and it was Felipe who spoke, cautiously. "Better," he said. "Especially since Calincourt got the door."
"Thanks for asking," Zack added, sounding just as wary.
"Good," Captain Rathbone said. "We can't afford to lose her." She paused a moment, drumming her fingers on her desktop. "Strictly off the record, gentlemen, I'm glad that son of a bitch is gone. He's been a pain in my ass since the day I took command. But you must have known that he would file a complaint against you before he got fired."
"Yes, ma'am," Felipe said, as neutrally as he could manage.
"We thought it was worth the reprimand, to be honest," Zack said. He hesitated a moment, then added, "She was crying," just a shade of reproach in his tone.
The captain had the grace to look abashed. "Yes, well, this is not high school, and we do not assault our fellow officers no matter how much they provoke us. I'm suspending you both for a week without pay."
Felipe had seen that coming, though Zack stiffened in his chair. "Ma'am," he began.
Captain Rathbone pointed a finger at him, and he shut up immediately. "You count your blessings," she said, severely. "If it had been under any other circumstances I'd probably have to fire Felipe. As it is, the chief is not pleased with either of you. Calincourt could still decide to sue us."
"Not if he knows what's good for him," Felipe muttered, and jerked upright when she shot a glare at him. "I meant only that he'd lose, ma'am."
"You better have," she said, and turned her attention back to Zack. "I understand what you did. I understand why you did it. If somebody upset my wife that much I'd probably want to do the same, but let me repeat that this is not high school. We are all at least theoretically adults here. We do not assault our coworkers or close them in lockers like the senior class bully. Now shut up and take your punishment like a man."
"Yes, ma'am," Zack said, crisply. "But I will not apologize to that sack of shit. Captain."
The self-proclaimed king of public relations, everyone. Felipe barely kept himself from rolling his eyes.
A tiny smile chased itself across the captain's face. "I wouldn't ask you to. The department did that already, on your behalf. Do us all a favor and don't argue with it."
Zack opened his mouth. Felipe stepped on his foot. King of public relations indeed. "No, ma'am," he said, obediently. "A week without pay, you said?"
"Badges and sidearms, both of you," she said, and planted both forefingers on her desk. "Right here."
Felipe took his badge out of his shirt pocket and his sidearm out of the underarm holster; put them both on her desk with Zack only half a beat behind. Captain Rathbone put them in turn in her desk drawer, and said, "Right, now get out of here. Go home, catch up on sleep, read that book you've been meaning to read, whatever. If either of you wants to pick Dr. Kendall up from work, nobody will say no, but other than that I don't want to see your faces until Monday, is that clear?"
"Yes, ma'am," they murmured, more or less in unison. Zack went right on out the door, but Felipe hesitated on the lintel, then turned back and said, "Please tell me we don't have to write lines."
"I will not assault fellow officers and put them in lockers. Written out fifty times and due next Monday," the captain said, without missing a beat. "Leave."
Grinning, he did as he was ordered.

I love this. I love that they didn't get away with it, but that people did understand why they did what they did. Calincourt deserved every inch of it.
Rathbone is awesome. I think I love her.
Great job.

Hahaha I know right? I can't even refer to her as Rathbone or Lisa in my head, she's all, "Captain Rathbone to you, missy" and I'm like "I WROTE YOU" but she won't let me get away with it. Love her.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
