She finds him at the river. Looking at the water. Lost in thoughts. Such a serious expression. It’s rare she manages to sneak up on him like this. Normally he always notices her presence right away.
“Rafael.”
He turns around when he hears her voice right behind him.
“Hey Nelly.”
The smile on his face is honest and it brightens her day. Though it falters a little when he sees the thoughtful look on her face.
“What’s the matter?”
She just looks at him. Pensive.
“I’m … not sure.”
Looking away she crosses her arms before her. She’s glad he respects her silence. Glad he gives her the time to think her words through. She’s never been good at speaking up.
“Rafael. How good do I know you?”
His eyes widen a little at her question. The look on his face is enough to show her that he doesn’t understand why she’s asking that.
“How well you know me?”
Nelly just nods. Waits for his answer. Patiently. Though he never needs as much time as she does to figure out what to say.
“You know me best of all. You know me nearly as good as I know myself. If not better. You know everything about me. My joys, my pains, the sadness. Everything. Why?”
She takes a deep breath. Releases it with a sigh. Still that pondering look on her face.
“Do I? Do I really know you so well? I mean. I thought I did. I was really convinced of it. B-but… I can’t figure out what you’d like. What you’d want… And that kinda bothers me. Not knowing. So I thought… Perhaps I do not know you as well as I thought I did…”
The look on Rafael’s face is one of incomprehension.
“I’m not sure what you’re getting at Nelly. You can’t figure out what I’d like, what I want? What for? You lost me with that trail of thought girl…”
A small smile on her lips.
“It’s your birthday next week silly. And I don’t know what to give you…”
A surprised look crosses his face. Before he chuckles softly.
“And that makes you doubt whether you know me?”
He wraps his arms around her shoulders, pulling her close against his chest.
“Oh girl. You know you don’t have to give me anything.”
She shakes her head. Her hands against his chest, pushing him a little away. Not hard enough for him to release his hold though.
“I know. But I want to. I just don’t know what… How can I not know what you’d like to get? If I do really know you as well as you claim I do. How can I not find you a birthday present?”
He lets go of her, places his hands on her shoulders. Gently kisses the top of her head.
“Don’t worry. I’m sure you’ll find something.”
Winking he turns around and walks away.

When I started writing this drabble, I was planning on taking it much more serious. But one way or another it didn't work out. I wrote the beginning 10 times. Before I deleted everything and decided serious was not going to work...
So, I just tried to keep a hint of the seriousness of the story line, but I also tried to make it a little more lighthearted as well. Nelly and Rafael are much younger in this drabble than they are in the previous ones. ^^
