14. We're two paychecks away from living out on the streets

My name is Ivy Hirschfeld-Kendall, and I'm here because I'm broke.

No, that's it. I've got student debt out my ears and four years of graduate school ahead. I heard about this show and I figured-- why not? It films over the summer so it won't interrupt classes, they give you some money even if you lose. Seemed worth a shot.

I guess the biggest problem with this is... I miss my family. I mean, not Aaron, obviously, but my sister and my parents. Usually the only time I see them is over the summer.

I guess not this summer.


2. I'll pick you up when you've had enough

My name is Aaron Kendall, and I'm here for my sister.

I'm really not interested in the prizes or the fame or whatever it is people do this for. I mean, I'm financially stable, I've got a job I like. Some money wouldn't hurt, but I wouldn't do something like this for it.

But my sister. She's hurting a lot more than me, I guess, and she never... she never really thinks before she acts. She's smart, but she's reckless. God only knows what she'd get up to without me to look out for her.

I admit it. I'm worried.


7. They're made of lipstick, plastic and paint, a touch of sable in their eyes

Who, me?

Oh, I thought this would be so much fun! I mean, being on camera, being famous!

Oh, silly me, of course. My name is Gina Caravecchio and I'm here because it's so much fun! I'll get to be famous!

What?

Of course I'm going to win, don't be silly. I'm the prettiest, after all. And I bet I'm the nicest. I just like people so much. Who's going to vote to kick me out? Nobody, that's who. Oh, you don't have to be a genius to win a silly game like this.

You just have to be smart.


6. Going straight to hell

My name is Ethan Hawkins and I'm here because... would you believe I don't know?

I do a lot of things without knowing why. I mean, what's life without a little bit of impulse? Half the best things that ever happened to me happened because I acted on impulse.

Of course, half the worst things that ever happened to me happened because I acted on impulse. Can't win them all.

I dunno. I almost don't know if I can even have a plan anymore. You have to have a plan for that, and...

I don't even know where I'm going.


3. Gonna take more than a shot to get this poison out of me

My name is Priya Thakarta, and I'm here because it was this or home.

I'm just... I'm so done with my family. My parents. They've always been strict with me and my sisters, and indulgent with my brothers, but whatever. But then my littlest sister? She got pregnant, and my parents just threw her out. Told me and my siblings to act like she was dead.

So fuck them. I'm going to take my money from this and my sister and me are going to set up house somewhere far away, and we're never going to speak to them again.


13. Shot through the heart as I lay there alone

My name is Hector Romero and I'm here because I have nowhere else to go.

Well, I suppose that isn't strictly true. I could go home, I guess. They'd let me in. My mother swore they wouldn't treat me any differently, but you know what? They do. I came out to them and suddenly no one can look me in the eye.

It just makes me so mad. They claim nothing's different, that they love me just the same, but I can feel it. They don’t love me the same, and they're lying about it.

So I'm here. Why not.


1. You promise me heaven, then put me through hell

My name is Vanessa Lynch, and I'm here because it's a nice way to kill a few months.

That's one reason. I do intend to enjoy myself while I'm here. The selection is quite nice-- you cast some very beautiful women. That little blonde especially, but she's too airheaded for me. If I had to pick, I'd choose the Arab woman. She's old, but looks as if she'd be up for some fun.

The real reason? Fine. I'm here because I want the prize. What I want, I get.

I'm here to win. And I'll enjoy myself while I do.


15. When your heart is made of stone

My name is Grant McLean, and I'm here to win.

What? That Lynch girl said the same thing? That's hardly something to worry about. What could she do, exactly? Flirt at me? Bat her eyelashes? Ha.

None of these people here could defeat me. Eight girls, at least two fags, and the rest of them too ugly to bother with? How, exactly, am I supposed to fail? Can you tell me who here would actually be competition for me?

No one. That's right. Not a single one of them has a ghost of a chance.

I'll enjoy watching them fail.


4. A king's ransom in dimes I'd given each night

My name is Madison Clarence, and I'm here because I want to be here.

You hear that? I want to be here. I don't do anything I don't want to do. I'm here 'cause I'm hot and really smart and I'm gonna win this prize, and then I'm gonna move away from home and buy all the clothes I want and never have to talk to those stuck-up bitches again. I do what I want, when I want it, and I'll never have to listen to anyone say anything different.

And there won't be anything they can do about it.


9. And the people I meet always go their separate ways

My name is Michael Sierbenski and I'm here because I want to be around people.

Sure, it would be nice to win. Who couldn't use a hundred thousand dollars, right? But I'm really here because... well, my whole life I've been running. Either in my head, or actually running, I've been moving. And my whole life, I've had my sister with me.

Seriously, she was always there. Always with me. And then she joined the Navy, when we ran for good, and she.... she wasn't there, not anymore.

It's been a year since I've seen her. I need people now.


5. She says we've got to hold on to what we've got

My name is Amanda Foster, and I'm here because I needed to put my siblings through college.

You see, our parents died in a car crash when I was eleven. My brother was nine, my sister seven. We went into foster care, and we managed to stay together, mostly. We were lucky. Most kids aren't.

But we're out of foster care now. We’ve got a little bit of money, from our parents, but it isn't enough. They needed tuition, books, transportation, room and board... this money would really help.

So I'm here. I'll get them through somehow.

Somebody has to.


12. There's a hunger burning in the heart of their souls

My name's Duncan Ralston, and I'm here on a dare.

I know, I know, that’s the stupidest reason ever. But the thing is, my best friend in the world told me that I wouldn't ever go on a reality show when I tried out. I laughed it off because I never thought I'd get the chance, but then the producers actually offered me a spot, and I figured, why not? I floored Ahava, anyway.

She's promised to send me care packages.

...why not? She's my best friend. I know she's cheering me on.

And I promised to share the winnings.


8. My life's a bargain basement, all the good shit's gone

My name is Nadia Amala, and I'm here because what the fuck else have I got left to do?

I mean, fuck it. I got a kid and no man, a shitty-ass dead-end job, a snobby family, bills coming out my ears. What're my other options, stick around and watch my life fall apart? Fuck that.

So I gave my kid to my sister and I came here. I could use the money. Maybe my family will quit looking down on me.

You know what? I don't give a shit if these kids fight me. Old age and treachery, right?


10. You left me drowning in my tears

My name is Edward Swanson, and I'm here because...

You know? I don't know anymore. I don't know why I agreed to come on this stupid show. I wouldn't have, if I'd known about Gina.

You guys brought me on here because of her, right? You know she dumped me, right? Broke my heart. And then she told me why, and...

Screw that, it doesn't matter anymore. You should know that I'm going to do my best to get kicked off this stupid show, because I don't want to be here anymore.

None of this is worth being around her.


11. You can see in their eyes life so paralyzed.

My name is Elisa Warmind, and I'm here because I have to do something.

You see, my mom just died. I... it still hurts, I still grieve for her, but at least I'm moving on, you know? I look at my siblings, and Chrissy and Mort, they're okay maybe, they both got their spouses and Chrissy has her kids, they have to think about other things. But the rest of my siblings? My dad? Lars and Anna especially. They're just... blank. Dead inside.

I'm here 'cause I hope it'll wake them up. Whether or not I win.

I totally predict Gina taking it all. I love the "has to" echoes throughout, the wide range of reasons (from compelling to straight-up assholish to absolutely hilarious, like Duncan). I'd totally watch this show in a heartbeat!
