Elisabeth waited with bated breath in their bedchamber. Fernando had been gone since this morning dealing with the riots in the city. Elisabeth prayed to the Holy One that he would come back unscathed.

There was a knock on the door and Elisabeth turned from the window expectantly. “Fernando?”

The door opened and Benedita came in. Elisabeth smiled at her, but then turned back to the window.

“Fernando is still in the city,” Elisabeth said by way of a greeting. Benedita shook her head.

“You don’t think he’ll get hurt do you, Benedita?” Elisabeth asked.

She immediately answered. “I doubt they’ll hurt the King.”

Elisabeth nodded. But Benedita could still see the worried look on her Queen’s face.

The two women waited for another hour before they heard movements outside. Elisabeth jumped up and ran out of the bedchamber.

“My Lady!” Benedita said picking up the ends of her ruby gown and running out of Elisabeth. The Queen was several paces ahead of her. She turned in a corridor and Benedtia lost sight of her. Benedita followed cautiously. She came upon the scene of Fernando clutching Elisabeth. Ortiz stood behind them.

Ortiz tipped his head slightly at her and Benedita gave him a secret smile before turning back to Elisabeth.

“They didn’t hurt you?” Elisabeth asked looking at Fernando.

Fernando shook his head slightly. “Most of them just wanted to talk.”

“Did you talk to them, Ferdi?”

Fernando looked away from Elisabeth. He let her go and stepped back.

“Did you Ferdi?”

“Who do you think I am, Elisabeth?” He asked suddenly angry.

Elisabeth recoiled. Anger flashed in her grey eyes. Why was he acting this way?

“You’re Fernando Abadesso, of course,” she said.

“I am the King. A King does not compromise himself.”

Elisabeth opened her mouth to say something. But Ortiz coughed. Elisabeth swung around to face him.

“The afternoon sessions are about to convene, Your Majesty,” he said to Fernando.

Fernando nodded and glanced at his wife. “I’ll talk to you about this later, Elisa.”

Elisabeth didn’t look at him as he left. Fernando and Ortiz walked off. Benedita came up to Elisabeth and placed a hand on her shoulder.

“I was just trying to help him,” Elisabeth ground out.

Benedita nodded. “Men can be so stubborn sometimes.”

Elisabeth sighed. Why did Benedita have to be right about this particular matter as well?

I sense this fight has just been postponed for the nonce. Ouch.

I think Fernando is going to be hearing more about this later. :/
