Note: Constructive criticism is welcome, either through comments or PM.

Carter was standing in her doorway, his eyes narrowed and his face pulled down into a frown. Beth removed one earbud and met his gaze glare for glare. "What do you want?"

"Stay out of my room," he said.

Beth rolled her eyes. "I wasn't in your stupid room."

"I saw you there," he said. "Just now, when I was on my way to the bathroom."

"I have no idea what you're talking about." Beth put the earbud back in, drowning out her brother's response with a guitar riff and a fast drumbeat.

Carter strode over and yanked both of her earbuds out. "Hey!" she yelled. "Tally got me those for Christmas! She said they're expensive!"

"And I said, don't pretend you don't know what I'm talking about," Carter snapped, throwing the earbuds on the bed. The music, tinny now, drifted faintly through the room.

"I wasn't in your room!" she insisted. "Why would I be in your room?"

"I saw you there!" Carter stopped short and looked her up and down. "Why did you change clothes?"

Beth, confused at this change in subject, looked down at herself. She was still wearing the polka dot t-shirt and red shorts she'd worn to school. "I didn't change clothes. I've been wearing these all day."

Carter's forehead collapsed into furrows, like he wasn't sure if he was still angry or not. "You were wearing that one purple shirt when you were in my room. Just a few minutes ago. Stop lying to me!"

"What purple shirt?" Beth hated purple. She didn't have a single item of purple clothing. There'd once been a sparkly purple shirt she liked to wear, but after Beth decided she hated purple she had slipped it into the Goodwill bag.

"The sparkly one," said Carter, now sounding more confused than furious. His eyes had taken on a far away look, like he wasn't entirely in the room with her anymore. It scared her.

So to stop being scared, Beth got angry. "Mom took that to Goodwill back in March! You're the one lying to me! Stop blaming me for stuff I didn't do, Carter!" She grabbed her earbuds and shoved one of them back in, clapping her hand over that ear in case Carter tried to take them out again.

He didn't. Instead, he took a step back, still looking lost. "I saw you," he said, his voice small. "In the purple shirt."

"Not today you didn't," said Beth. She put the second earbud in and stared defiantly at him, daring him to keep talking.

But Carter just turned and walked out of the room. The hunched shoulder shuffle he took made Beth's stomach lurch like she'd just eaten too much candy too fast. She closed her eyes and focused all of her attention on the next song.

Oh, poor Carter. Man, if Beth thinks she's scared, he must be terrified. But I really like the way you explore the impact of it on the rest of the family, and this is really cool.
