Transparent 16
Name:
auguris
'verse: Universe Lost
Story: Pretend
Colors: Transparent 16. Masculine
Supplies and Styles: Graffiti (Sick of romance), Canvas, Brush (sub rosa), Chalk (Space is cold, vast, and deadly. Humans will explore it anyway.)
Word Count: 361
Rating: PG
Warnings: Might be triggery for trans body issues.
Summary: Kate will support Bren in everything, no matter what.
She had entertained going full nouveaugoth, but with one semester left of this shitty school before she jetted off to space she had decided not to push it. Mummy dearest still had veto power.
Her outfit was appropriately demure as well: a clean, baby-blue button up blouse that matched her eyes, smooth professional black trousers to go with. Black shiny flats -- heels, and not wearing them, was one of the few things they agreed on.
At least she didn't have to worry about impressing her father – quelle surprise, he'd cancelled at the very last moment. Important AGID business on the other side of the universe or some such. Truth, he was probably avoiding her mother.
The bathroom door opened and Bren took a long, shaky breath before asking, "Sight me?"
Kate stared at her reflection. He'd turned off his voice mod, sounded high and prissy. She had promised, cross-hearted, to help him pretend. She set her jaw, the way her grandfather did when he didn’t want to show emo. If Bren could do this, could work through his pain, then she could work through her hurt. His was tenfold; hers was for him.
She turned slowly, aiming to keep her expression neutral. She failed. "Oh, brother mine." She had taken to calling him brother a few years back, almost as a joke, but lately it came naturally. Especially now. Boy-terms were going to be very important over the next sol.
He wore a close-necked, ankle-length mud-colored dress with tight three-quarter sleeves. Hair extensions to his shoulders, and his chest, he had--
"Are those falsies," she murmured.
"Mum doesn't know about the hormone inhibitors," he whispered. "It's what she expects."
Kate threw her arms around his shoulders. "Five months," she whispered. "We jet to civilization and don't play pretend anymore."
Bren buried his head in her shoulder and didn't let go for ages. He stepped back, finally, and said, "You didn't answer my question."
Sight me. "If..." she shuddered. "If you were a girl, you’d be beautiful."
He let out a wet, shaky laugh. "Thanks."
